  • Wow free houses for life. We paid 150k plus interest for ours by working full time for numerous years. I hadn't realized you could get them for free. Which government department do I have to apply to get my refund ? Oh and can I get all my council tax back as well?

Ahhhh ok that makes sense..£549.99 for a 3 bed...where as mine is £408 quite a saving for them,Even with paying the extra for the 2 bed LHA, thanks have made total sense of it now :-) how strange that the MP would point that out...:-/

There is no saving for them, just because your rent is £408 a month doesn't mean that's what it costs them. Remember when you are in social housing your landlord is responsible for the upkeep of your property, insurance etc.

Perhaps the politicians in those countries have other ways of winning elections. The tried and trusted means of winning elections in this country is to fill the pockets of poor with lots of dosh and free housing and in return get their votes. Its a no brainer. At the end of the day the politicians who make the decisions to pay hundreds of pounds every week as benefits do not have any responsibility of paying it back, if it wins them elections then why not ?

Perhaps they never had a desperate government in, who brought votes and created a forth class, called the "entitled to" class?

Maybe it is time for those who are not on benefits, to get 2 votes? And yes, tax credits are benefits.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Re read the thread. The saving is on the 3 bed rate of LHA,£549, that they are paying for the family who are waiting for a 3 bed social house; that only costs £408.

And everyone in private rentals paying over the LHR rate should write to their MP, along with everyone who is on the SH waiting list.

    Just to balance it out.

Why don't the people who are having to top up their LHA just move to a property which is within the LHA rate to avoid a top up?

People living in social houses that have too many bedrooms for their needs, is a big problem.

    Why is it 'big problem'?

For the same reason people facing a reduction in benefits in SH don't.

Ie the don't want to move into the lower 30%, haven't got a guarantor, feel more secure in their tennancy (even if short lived, better the devil you know) etc.

Main question - is why don't they move into SH?

reply would be there aren't any!

Surely if you pay your own mortgage or rent, YOU are paying for the rooms you have, the taxpayer is not...

The taxpayer is subsidising low mortgage interest rates for 'owner-occupiers', if it wasn't for the taxpayers bailing out the banks, interest rates would have increased dramatically.

I paid 15% for many years (my home was virtually owned, and had savings, not performing) so how does that happen?

Those on benefits (subject to the Tax) are not tax payers.

The same reason that the majority of social housing tenants don't move to a suitable size house there isn't many.

I just had a look for how many properties I could rent on my lha and came up with 1 with about another 3 who would cost about 50 quid a month. Needless to say that I would not want to stay in any of the areas.
Play nice  Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.:j
