How do you use Contactless in McDonalds ?

Okay I know it sounds like a stupid question, but everytime I use it I get told to 'Put your card in the bottom', then 'It goes in the bottom', to a look like !!!!!! when it just works and comes up approved !.

But (And this is where I need help) every time I tap the screen with the card it does not work, I have to hold it to the screen for a bit, remove it and then hold it to the screen again for a bit for it to work.

Is there a special way of doing it, do you not hold it to the screen at all, or just wave it in front of the screen or what ?.

As I am sure if it was faster I would get told less times of 'It goes in the bottom !'.

In my experience, you don't use it as the staff haven't been trained properly. It's quicker to use chip & pin, than to debate it with them,
  • Depends where you are, in London they seem fairly comfortable with them.

With my Barclay's debit card it only works for me if I present the side without the chip, if I hold it the other way round it doesnt work at most locations

When I use it for my lunch I just hold it against the contact pad for a few seconds. It then beeps. I then walk out the shiop with my food.

Seems easy enough, but it could be the staff.

For contactless to work quickly and effectively, just hold the card face up over the screen. The video below demonstrates it perfectly.

On the till it says "credit card" if the staff do not press this it doesn't set the card reader to be 'ready' for either contactless or for a card to be inserted.

Simply say to the staff member "I am paying by card" then if they are not !!!!!!, they will press the "credit card" button on their till, allowing you to simply hover your contactless card over the reader, or insert it for a Chip & PIN transaction.

    Mind boggling ey?

P.S. The limit for Contactless is £20 (as of June 2012) and not £15.

I just hold the card above the screen part for about a second until it says approved - that method worked about 90% of the time for me.

I have the impression that they sometimes replace the card readers with a model that looks identical but doesn't have the contactless functionality though - which might be why you've been having problems too.

Also be aware that there is a limit on the number/amount you can make/spend on contactless transactions, before you will have to enter your PIN. Security limits in case you lose your card.

I have noticed that many McD's do not have contactless terminals.

When I use the McDonald's contactless terminals they have a row of led lights across the top.

Simply hold your card there until all the lights are illuminated. They light up one by one from left to right.

May not be the same for every terminal though

I use contactless (Kalixa pre-paid) in exactly the same way as a debit card except that it's tapped instead of inserted: I look on the terminal to see if it says "insert card". If it doesn't say that I draw the attention of the till person by waving the card about with their limited range of sight: Best to do that because some of them don't speak English!

In practice a contactless card is not tapped although it's known as tap and go. Just lay the card on top of the terminal until the light show is done.

I just tell the staff 'paying with contactless?' they go 'yes' press a button on their till and then place the card on the terminal for a couple seconds, then it says approved and I take it off. It wont work if the till member doesnt put the card/contactless payment method on their till
