its been covered before. it just is. Statistically unemployed people must claim more often, so unfortunately you're being grouped with them.

Interestingly, being a 'full time carer' or 'retired' doesnt seem to matter so much

It is because they think you will have less money to maintain your vehicle, which could lead to an accident.

Its not for me, a friend was telling me about it tonight and I was interested to know why? its not that they will be on the road more than the employed - using their cars to get to and from work thus increasing the risk of accident.
What's to stop someone creating a ltd company and becoming a director and putting themselves down as employed?

When I was out of work it was cheaper to class myself as a 'homemaker' than unemployed. Even though I was looking for work, the fact that I did all the cooking and cleaning I felt justified the tag.

So if one wanted to claim do insurers ask to see payslips?

If you're claiming JSA then you could have problems with an Insurer if you said you're a homemaker. If you had a family to look after and house to run it would be ok.

Not if you're unemployed and on JSA though

No but it's just not worth the risk.

Mine went up from £400 ish to £700 ish even with 20+ years of driving/working. Total rip off.

I would go for House Husband. See what the quote is. That way he hasn't actually lied.

They have if they're claiming JSA aka Job Seekers Allowance.
