Urgh - internal applicants. I have a parental who works in teaching, I believe it took them something like 10 interviews before they got a promoted post due to this unfortunate trend. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with nepotism for good candidates, but why put everyone else through it when it often appears to be a done deal?

I am so tempted to just build a house on our field and sod planning, since there is a family living in a log cabin on the field opposite who have been there six years.

Sounds like a lovely day. You could investigate putting up some of these trendy 'tiny houses'. A lot of these are on wheels to get around planning. Lots on Google. I thought I was a minimalist, but now I just feel deluded. Tiny houses look like great fun, but they're completely impractical for more than two tidy people. I saw an episode of Tiny House Nation and the child was expected to sleep in a cupboard that made Harry Potter look spoiled by the Dursleys
