ERE made me laugh when I looked at it. Some great points and freely admit if I had followed the advice there some 20 years back I would be very nicely off now. On the otherhand I wouldnt have 2 horses a large dog or a moneypit of an old cottage with fields for the horses.
Mr Watty and I would have remained in my little terrace house that I had when we met (he sold his as was in negative equity after an expensive divorce). That house was within walking distance of the town, I would have changed jobs so I could walk to work and not bothered with a car, he would have kept his and his job. It would have been a very different life. We would have been VERY well off. Happier? I am not sure of that. Retired by now? Yes for sure. Love where we live? No.
Fun to think on. There has to be a balance. I wouldn't swap what we have now for what we could have had.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
That is a very thoughtful post. I would only WANT to move for a place with fields right by us, or a farm.
I guess it is important to know why we make these choices rather than sleepwalking along with them.0 -
No specific objections other than the author's smug Americanitude Alchemilla
ERE is great - the guy has all the charm of a plank - but you can't argue with his maths.
I find it much easier to absorb messages when someone has actually walked the walk (even though he did end up going back to work as a quant on $$$$$$)!0 -

Hi Alchemilla, glad to find your diary. I read pages 1-4 then skipped to page 51, it appears that your children must all be a year older now and that you did indeed at some point get a pony! Subscribed and will follow with interest, good going on the baking/cooking.
Love the idea of posting what you are grateful for, I keep a paper gratefulness diary and one of my 2014 goals is positive thinking so it can't hurt to post things on here too, I might nick that idea.
