How stupid, of course that is not how they operate as a business. They quote and price at a cost that is viable to the company and on a par with other national providers. Many customers, but particularly the elderly, are happy to pay the higher cost because they are comforted by the back up guaranteed by the size of the organization. Customers who don't need or want this will go independent.
ollski: I've asked elsewhere but no reply: do you work for British Gas?0 -
yes mate, sorry meant to reply to your 300+ question. You're spot on it's a flexicom / ultracom hybrid with no direct glowworm equivalent. Basically uprated display and range rateable output.0

Thursday 16:28 Got a call from British Gas on their 08009 number. I say hello and they put the phone down. I think the BG guy who I spoke to on Tuesday is still hoping to get to my dad for him to say go ahead.
I sent an email on Monday morning to cancel fulfilling their terms and conditions but it I guess BG don't want to abide by their own terms and conditions give back the deposit and cancel.
If BG were going to ring to tell me their "revised figure" and to answer my questions about the 24 metres of copper pipes then they would atleast have spoke to me.
My aunt phoned my dad yesterday telling him not to pay over £4000 for a conventional boiler to "the gas board" and instead get a combi boiler from an Age Concern recommended plumber - although in February 2010 that one got very easily spooked and had a rant at dad.How stupid, of course that is not how they operate as a business. Thread about BG homecare miseryyes mate, sorry meant to reply to your 300+ question. You're spot on it's a flexicom / ultracom hybrid with no direct glowworm equivalent. Basically uprated display and range rateable output.0 -
Sorry that was a slightly off topic reply to a question from diywhynot about one of the bg branded boilers.
As far as a complaint thread goes I expect there to be a few simply on the size of the business. There will clearly be a few rotten apples, a few inexperienced guys as bg train up more engineers than anyone else, and a few misdiagnosis. Fortunately if there has been advice which falls short of what it should have been then homecare services are covered by the insurance ombudsman so appeals and refunds are arbitrarily decided.
I don't see that they are being difficult in your case. In reality your dad signed a contract and unless he cancels personally they are well within their rights to just continue with the installation. I would expect you to lose your deposit as a minimum to cover bg's costs, but who knows perhaps they are refund it out of goodwill.0 -

This seems to be a habit of British Gas going by a few of the quotes on the forum.
We have just had a quote to replace a similar aged boiler. It requires a connection to the nearest radiator, which is a door frame away (no floor boards).....£4500, not including the £400 they give you for the old boiler.
The member of British Gas staff didnt seem to be technically minded but rather a box ticker for the quoting software on his computer.
The boiler may also be "new" when installed, but the model itself seems to date back to 2007.
There are other insurance companies that will cover a boiler than British Gas...and at the end of the day, no matter who installed it or where it came from the insurance company will look for ANY reason not to give you full cover for the cost of a repair/replacement....so why go with British Gas in the first place other than for the misrepresentation that their brand name implies ability and quality?!0 -
Is my heating advisor technically minded? He used a laptop for 20 minutes at our house to come up with the price.
A few days later Friday When i asked if he'd use a key hole saw
him:you're asking me what type of saw we'd use (annoyed)
yeah
Your not a plumber, I don't even know what a key hole saw is
long thin, so you don't have to lift up floorboards
we'd use a zip saw circular saw

Now it seems to me the saw to curve round corners to make a hole in a floorboard would be a jig saw, a circular saw only goes in straight lines.
the 08009 806 166 number that called us yesterday doesn't take incomming calls. When I rang it it was just an automated message. What does that say about their homecare when you need to ring them?I don't see that they are being difficult in your case. I would expect you to lose your deposit as a minimum to cover bg's costs, but who knows perhaps they are refund it out of goodwill.

Im sorry, but what use would a keyhole saw be? you need to take floorboards up you use a circular saw..
You dont cut curves around floorboards, they need to be cut straight. You would never use a jigsaw to cut floorboards..

My friend you don't seem to be getting the point I'm trying to make.....YOU ARE NOT THE CUSTOMER!. Nothing you are referring to really has any relevence. Advise your dad he could get it done cheaper, let him decide to cancel or continue and go home and worry about other things.0 -
In an earlier life i used to fit central heating systems. It was standard practice to skillfully use a circular saw to lift floorboards. Of course such a tool needs to be used in experienced hands and is by far the best way to lift floorboards. You simply set the blade depth slightly less than the thickness of the board, zip along the full length to chop the tongues, then raise using floorboard chisels, extract nails, fit pipe and then screw board back in place. Chipboard? needs extra care !Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
