Hello, On Wednesday morning I was surprised to find a gas central heating installer engineer/plumber turn up at our house. Dad had arranged for British Gas to come look at getting a new boiler, perhaps because social services mentioned it to him. The quotation says its going to cost £4266.51:eek:

It's not like we're getting new radiators but instead a new header tank with ball !!!! and feeder pipe. I did say to the plumber/heating engineer I thought it was over twice the amount I was expecting. Anyway dad gave a 10% deposit cheque to the engineer.

System performance £1090 (various bits including new header tank with ball !!!! and feeder pipe, thermostat)
Boiler £794
Standard boiler replacement (labour £1173+flue) £1599
Customisation (flue, pipes, condensate, bricks, more labour) and compliance £1086

1090+794+1599+1086=4569

+system reliability =~ £4816
-discount/allowances boiler sale £550
=£4266

Are we getting anything much more than a normal boiler replacement which would cost half this much?

The chances are low. He wasn't keen for me to look at the brochure and printed sheets. But I have had a sneaky look. I took some photos of it but just the technical bits not the customer number.

Is there a way for BG to lower their price?

    He's 80 years old BTW.

They're comming on Monday for two days work. The quotation man spent 90 minutes here. They were going to dump the boiler etc here on Friday till I asked why.IMG422%20quotation%20rplesm.jpg?psid=1,,,,

  • Stop taking photos of the quote, and get it cancelled!
As southcoastrgi already said, that's stupid money and you know it otherwise you'd not be posting here :D

Is your dad satisfied with the quote and paying for it out of his own money in his own house?. Is he of sound mind?. If not you could ring bg and explain your dad is incapable of making decisions himself and you should be acting on his behalf. If so perhaps your dad knows he is paying 1 - 1.5k over and above what he could be paying but feels comfortable in his choice. Either way there is a cool off period in which the job can be cancelled.

This cooling off period, does it extend over the weekend? since they are comming on Monday. Is British Gas open on Weekends?

I'd have to sneak into dad's room when he goes out to find the brochure and print outs and get the customer number. But dad doesn't leave his room much.

Dad seemed satisfied with the quote.

We had 3 plumbers a couple of years ago try and fix the old one. We've used electric heaters since since then.

Is he of sound mind? I've known him for decades and he's normally not been been on forking out money, but then we've put up with electric heaters for two years. Social services suggested the heating needed sorting, but obviously must have decided he was of sound mind.

That's possibly the worst boiler quote I've ever seen. Tell them to getifa.

I can see we need 3m of pipe for the feeder pipe for the header tank, but the other 2x3m doesn't seem necessary. Maybe I can find the number to ring them. I've only one working day left. We already have a flue hole so why need bricks?

Our old electric immersion hot water tank cycling doesn't have one of those big red thick jackets other people have (just polystyrene). Will it still be without a jacket?

I would phone them asap. That price is scandalous.
