Tea bags etc. Biscuits/cake. (M&S if I like the visitors enough.) Clean the loo and make sure they can actually find the sofa to sit down. That's enough, surely?

Yep it is, I found a magazine that had an article about having a house full at xmas, it said, clean loos, bleach down, put some nice towels out, clean down kitchen, hoover up and jobs a good un, so have done just that, quick tidy, quick bleaching, nice cups out, done:D

Mum really you don't know how to do a quick tidy and bleaching it's been more like a woman on a mission. Yes the House of Fraser mugs you got a fortnight ago will do the trick nicely :rotfl::rotfl:

  • An old friend came to stay recently who I'd not seen for many years after losing touch. I tidied like mad for two days, then naturally apologised for "the mess" when she arrived. Oh don't worry, she says, I remember how you always lived in chaos, I expected it!

jeez - I dont think even the Queen would expect that much!
lol - I keep the kitchen and bathroom clean and tidy, but I do LIVE in the Living room - so my stuff is in there! Dining room isnt bad unless I have used the table to do craft stuff and it needs to dry overnight! Drives OH mad - he rather expects the house to look as if we are featuring in Homes and Gardens magazine! Sod that! Its a home and we arent dirty, there is always somewhere to sit - but please move my knitting, crochet, jewellery or cardmaking projects if you want!

I dont like visiting people who make too much effort! puts me on edge - much prefer being told to 'put kettle on and the mugs are in the sink' to someone faffing about with the best china and putting biccies on little plates and plumping up cushions for you!

my OH does this, especially when his parents are coming round. It makes me laugh because I think a quick "lets get rid of any laundry and obvious rubbish we haven't put away". He goes nuts and disinfects the entire house. Ironically, his sister does the same and gets so nervous about having people round that she simply never has anyone round. So, to cut a long story short, his parents come to mine for dinner at least once a week because they like the relaxed and informal atmosphere. As I've said to them beforehand, you're my family, I'll just be making a bit more of the dinner I had planned anyway. As long as you're not expecting a 3 course meal, then come along, have a glass of wine, a plate of pasta and a chat. Fine by me.

Should add, I tend to have coffee, tea and wine in the house. They know this, so if they want somehing different (FIL likes schloer) they bring it themselves.

As my mum would say, 'manners, pianos, tables and chairs, all belong to the lady upstairs'.

I used to worry what people would think until someone said to me 'what do you think will happen if someone comes round and your house isn't clean? Do you think they won't like you any more?' It's so true, what exactly IS going to happen??

As someone else said, as long as the toilet has been bleached recently then I'm happy to let anyone in.

  • Had visitors at an less than an hours notice yesterday!

    I......

Hoovered the lounge, hallway and kitchen (downstairs loo is through there)
Tidied up the lounge (wasn't that messy but it made me feel better)
    Cleaned the downstairs loo/sink etc
emptied and reloaded the dishwasher to get rid of the cups on the side, generally tidied up the kitchen and was still doing that when they arrived early!

I don't live in a show home but OH can be incredibly messy and leave stuff lying around especially when he decides to take his shoes/socks off - I usually find at least 3 pairs around downstairs in any given week where he has just discarded them!
