Was in Sainsbury's today with my mother and President butter has gone up to 1.70  Didn't buy any as it's 1.55 at Ocado but on offer at moment, 2 for 2.70

Sainsbury's SO organic butter is up from 1.49 to 1.60. I don't know whether it has gone up or not. but Sainsbury's Famhouse Butter 250g was 1.50 and you can usally find it in a chiller near the deli or at the deli. Also found Mlevokita Maslo Polskie butter from Poland, 200g for 1.25

I don't recall ever seeing on packets of butter whether they are lactic or not, but I have seen this mentioned on the websites of various brands.

In days of yore, all butter was lactic butter. The dairymaid would have to save up enough cream to churn and it would start to ferment.

In North America butter is made straight away from the fresh cream. Most but not all European butters are lactic butters, made with cream which has fermented and they taste richer.

HTH smallblueplanet and if you want to know whether a butter is lactic or not suggest readi ng how they make it bit on their website.

Buffy the vampire (luv that) I recall that Morrisons delisted the Wyke Farm cheeses. Noticed that they sell them from their own website but currently cheaper at Iceland. I checked and they don't sell the butter online. www.wykefarms.com

I like Calon Wen organic milk from a group of 25 Welsh family farms, and they sell their organic butter online, salted/unsalted 250g 1.50 www.calonwen-cymru.com

Lurpack unsalted block for me - but weirdly I dont like the salted version but if you grind rock salt onto it it tastes nicer than their salted!
At least the fish fingers are still frozen, that's what I keep telling myself (Truly Madly Deeply)

  • President here too, excellent for baking too. This time last year it was £1.20 in Sainsbury's though, really has gone up in price.

  • As a firefighter I get to visit a number of factories - in one case we went to a chemical rendering plant where unused tubs of margarine were being rendered back into their consituent chemicals - you might be surprised that most seemed to be toxic and hazardous in their raw forms ..... I've never eaten the stuff again!

Waitrose's essential butter is not much over £1.00 (I think £1.10 'ish) and very good.
