This thread has made me feel so guilty ... half way through reading it I had to go and tidy so wiped all the sides, swept floor, cleaned sink, loaded and put dishwasher on, wiped all cupboard door handles, washed any marks from cupboard doors, swept hallway floor, put clothes in washing machine, wiped marks from internal doors downstairs ... but now I'm back.

My OH says I'm too house proud but I don't spend hours and hours cleaning, I just like it looking clean and tidy but I don't particularly have a routine, I just do what I think needs doing that particular day.

I think I might benefit from a routine though and it may result in me not cleaning the same things so many times per week but what do people do if say they need to hoover but not on routine till a day later. I don't know whether I'd stick to it.

loving this thread although it has made me feel incredibly guilty about the lack of cleaning I do. One idea I have found really works for me is kind of like the 10 minute blitz but instead uses the ad breaks on TV. When you think about it the average 30 minute programme has 3 breaks in it (beg, middle and end) thats 9 mins where you are being sold to. I find I can do loads in those 3 mins like empty the dishwasher, run a load of junk upstairs, dust the lounge, etc etc.
Not exactly kim and aggie but works for me!

i discovered the 3 minute runaround during the adverts about 6 months ago and it really does work :j i tend to do this most evenings now as i cant stand watching the same awful adverts all the time  to do my evening washing up i fill my sink with hot water and let w/up soak and run outside with the bin bags by that time my programme is back on, the next advert i run out and do 1/2 w/up, next advert is the rest of washing up and a cuppa and the drying up normally takes 2 adverts too :D i must stop being so addicted to tv :o
proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance! :p

  • I know it's time to vacuum when the doghair 'dust bunnies' are the same size as the cat. (I'm only half joking...)

Have been trying to stick to the Sandra Felton 'Bare Bones' system of 4 tasks in the morning, 4 tasks in the evening and a 15 minute frenzy - with kitchen timer - once a day. It's great for staying on top, but catchup is difficult.

what is this routine of which you speak? I do what needs doing when it needs doing...but sometimes less often because I'm useless and hate cleaning with a passion!

  • I mop and hoover a couple of times during the week as we have a wooden floor throughout and do daily tidying up so everything back where its supposed to be and clean and bleach the loo everyday. Ironing gets done on a sunday night and washing is down throughout the week.

I get home from work at 2pm on a Friday and the weekly cleaning session starts!

Bung a load of washing in.

Kitchen: Move everything and wipe down tops, clean the fronts of the cabinets and appliances, clean fridge before the shopping arrives (delivered by tesco), clean microwave, clean drawer on washing machine. Hoover & Mop

Hall / Office: Polish, mop & hoover.

Lounge: Wipe down leather sofa, sort though my sons toy box (see what hes brought down that should be upstairs), clean hearth, polish, clean patio window (lots of little finger marks!) Move furniture to hoover properly and Mop.

Tea Break! before we move upstairs.

Hoover the stairs and wipe down bannister.

Master bedroom: Strip bed (let it air for a bit), clean mirrors, polish & hoover.

Spray bathroom with cif and then go and make the bed whilst that is doing its work

Bathroom. Scrub & Rinse, Make sure taps are sparkling and have a quick look through cabinet see if anything worth throwing. Chuck all towels in the washing basket, clean mirrors, mop & hoover.

Toddlers Bedroom: Erm where do i start, i tidy and he messes it back up so i dont really get anywhere in here, except a quick polish and a hoover.

By the end of this im normally grumpy and fed up, my toddler is normally head butting the floor in frustration that mummy hasnt spent any quality time with him. But i like to get it out the way by the time my partner comes home and then its done for the weekend.

    Its all fun!
  • i know this is an old thread but i have forund it very useful, thankyou all

  • I start off with a routine all the washing done one day , the bathroom and bedroom the next but sometimes this goes out the window when other things i have to do crop up which is usually every week.i use to get very stressed out about the housework but not anymore i do it once a week then thats it .life,s for enjoying aswell not just cleaning everything.i like cutting corners and an easier life why make it difficult for yourself ,now and then i do get the paper plates from the 99p shop out especially when having a buffet and lots of visitors . housework should be balanced do some of it then dont forget your tea break.:rotfl:
  • I used to clean the house twice a week but have chilled out a little and do it all on a Thursday morning. I reckon it takes at least two hours every evening on top of that to get some washing out of the way, fill and empty the dishwasher, cook a meal from scratch and tidy round before bed. We have two teenagers at home and various girlfriends etc coming in and out at random intervals.

I do not understand why people would for example: clean bedroom 1 on Monday the bathroom Tuesday... why can't you do it all in one go? sheer laziness! I clean everyday (and i work long hours so there is no excuse) my home is always spotless i could not leave it.

I'm assuming you don't have a small person shouting "potty mummy" or falling over and banging her head and crying, or wanting a drink or a biscuit etc, start at beginning and repeat, whilst you are trying to clean. I'm also pregnant with our second and find the exertion of cleaning for long periods very tiring.

It would be lovely to get all my cleaning over and done with in one go and the idea of a spotless house with no bricks to fall over is appealing however the hustle and bustle of family life kind of get in the way of this sort of perfection.

As well as the small person I do all our cooking from scratch, including making bread, yoghurt, baking and all the preserves an pickles we can eat or give away, I am very active in our local community arts group and I am also doing an OU degree so when the kids are older I can get a better job so wouldn't say I was all that lazy!
