So my original feeling that AMEX is not accepted in many popular outlets might be correct.

one other thing, I found out that even with the dual credit card system, the MBNA card will still offer 0.5% cashback.

I'm not sure what more you want us to say... I've already said that, in my experience, I can use Amex at 90% of the places where I shop.

You have both the cards and I presume that you get more points/cashback by using the Amex one so just use it where you can and the other where you can't. Don't make the mistake of asking people if they accept Amex, often people will just say no because they don't know, just stick it in the machine and see if it works.

Agreed, there is definitely some poor training.

I was at a garden centre recently and the guy told me that they didn't take Amex, I said that I'd only used it the day before and he spoke to the person next to him and said "Oh, I've been telling people we don't take it".

i used to have that problem. a casino near to me has staff that have told me "that doesn't work here" when i know full well i can clear my tab using Amex.

i tend not to ask. just whack the Amex Cashback in. if it's not accepted, Visa appears;)

I was referring to paying via Paypal checkout and then using the HSBC Amex card - see post #130. You are paying Paypal I guess, so where do you stand on purchase protection?
AIUI there's no S75 protection when paying by PayPal. You have PayPal's own system if you have a dispute.

Worth bearing in mind then, if you go the Retailer > Paypal Checkout > Don't log in > Use Amex card route then.

This has given me an idea though. If you need to manage 2 Paypal accounts, oe maybe 2 Amazon accts, you can one one MBNA credit card for one and another, the Amex, for the other.
