Here is the ingredient list for alpro original in which sugar is the third largest ingredient.
Water, Hulled soya beans (6%), Sugar, Acidity regulators (Monopotassium phosphate, Dipotassium phosphate), Calcium carbonate, Flavouring (), Sea salt, Stabiliser (Gellan gum), Vitamins (Riboflavin (B2), B12, D2)
Be under no illusions soya milk is as manufactured a product as orange squash.
Strange, I have drunk soya milk all my life (have been severely allergic to dairy since birth) and my teeth are absolutely fine. I have had one filling, which is in a wisdom tooth and was only needed because my mouth is small and the tooth is very cramped so difficult to clean properly. So drinking soya milk every day of my life so far hasn't caused any dental decay for me!0 -
And here is the ingredients list for Alpro Soya Organic Unsweetened:
Water, Hulled Organic Soya beans (6.5%)
..that's it !
As someone pointed out earlier on, there's so many to choose from. Many do have loads of things added to them, but some just have water and soya beans.
My youngest brother had to have soya milk when he was a baby, as normal formula milk gave him colic. He also hasn't had problems with his teeth, though he was able to tolerate milk products later on.
If I want to eat cereal of a morning I tend to have rice milk, which does taste sweet, although it's also got no sugar added to it. I get on best with the rice milk, though it's not as filling as normal milk. Oaty Milk is also good, imo.0 -
Soya milk on its own without sugar added is used by mouth bacteria to produce acid which will decay teeth.
Rice milk has its own sugars, one cup contains about two spoons of sugar .That's why it tastes so sweet and again if consumed several times a day can cause decay.
Oatly milk (plain) has about one teaspoon of sugar per cup. The flavoured e.g. vanilla has alot more.
The point is nut, oat, rice, soy milks have the potential to harm teeth that animal milks do not. Indeed animal milks are ideal for buffering the acid and a piece of cheese after a meal is an excellent way of stopping the acid attack from sugars quicker.0 -
Thanks everyone for the input, it's been really interesting reading...
Still confused tho! varying points for, and against....0 -
Aother issue with soy milk is not to do with health, but with the deforestation of the Brazilian rainforest for soy bean crops.NSD May 1/150

I like chocolate soy milk, but only on occasion, I prefer cows milk, or sometimes rice milk.
Soy makes my stomach very angry.0 -
When I stopped eating wheat my lactose intolerance cleared up. Now I can drink milk and cream with no issues.
I avoid processed foods so I wouldn't touch soy milk with a barge pole. Besides it tastes terrible. Why mess up what nature has provided for us?
I have had exactly the same experience, I've cut out the wheat and dairy is no longer a problem, even when consumed in huge quantities. I refuse to consume homogenised dairy products - it's not proven but the links between that, leaky gut syndrome and various modern day health problems such as arthritis and autism is too big a risk for me to continue taking.
It's not well known, but the protein structure of the wheat grown now is very different from that grown until only a few decades ago. And it's only very recently in evolutionary terms that humans have included large quantities of grain in their diet.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
