Soy or cow's milk?

And why?

If you're not lactose intolerant, are there real substantiated health benefits from not drinking cow's milk?

I've heard how some people believe soy (soya) milk is extremely good for you and cow's milk not at all.

Enlighten me! (and no, not looking for medical guidance here, just those who may be in the know from their experiences)

(of course this  beats both, just sayin', but that's an argument for another day)

From my personal experience. I've eaten/drunk dairy products cows/goats/sheep all my life with no ill effects so far. I can't comment on the long term effects of soy milk as its foul taste meant that I only tried it once.

I have no idea. But my daughter had to have soya milk as a baby and it stank. There is no way I would drink it through choice.

I have just started having soy in tea, not too bad so far, just for a change really.... was actually quite a big milk drinker. I guess some people like it and some hate it, but I wonder what the real health benefits for either side are...
  • It tastes exactly the same as normal milk, so to those people who said it tasted weird, !!!!!! were you drinking?

I have to have soy or almond as I'm lactose intolerant. Not sure it's any better or worse for me than normal milk, other than it goes all weird in coffee :(
  • When I tried soy milk it tasted awful. Cow's for me all the way; have no ill affects.

I used to love cows milk - but the thought struck me one day that its not natural to drink another animals milk (I think I was breastfeeding my last baby at the time). I never now drink milk in tea or coffee, but cannot stand the taste of soya milk. I think the benefits are that it is a completely vegetarian product so no risk of 'cholesterol'. also that it is non fattening as it contains no fat but does have vitamins and protiens.

DH has a splash of milk in his tea, but when it comes to cereals he has soya milk as too much milk really upsets his stomach and he gets painful cramps and, well the trips to the lav aren't fun for him.
It's only happened in recent years though. He does suffer from reflux, so the doctor said that soya was better for him.
    It's not expensive either, think it's 59p a carton.

It's as natural as eating the flesh from an animal!?

Loads of food has milk in it anyway

I hardly drink any milk, tiny splash in tea or coffee

I have a friend who only drinks soya and I couldn't tell the difference in a cup of tea

I think soya does have beneficial health properties. However, I can't stand the stuff, so I don't drink it!

I don't drink cows milk, either, because if I do my skin gets really bad and I get abdominal problems, so maybe I'm a bit intolerant to it.

Many Eastern cultures don't have dairy as part of their cuisine, and these cultures tend to have lower incidences of, say, breast cancer. Having said that I think they have higher rates of other cancers, maybe stomach cancers, I'm not 100% sure, so I guess no diet is perfect.

My doctor warned me off cows milk as a sufferer of PCOS and various other things. My health has improved ten fold since I stopped consuming any cows milk/products from it.
