Soy or cow's milk?

When I stopped eating wheat my lactose intolerance cleared up. Now I can drink milk and cream with no issues.
I avoid processed foods so I wouldn't touch soy milk with a barge pole. Besides it tastes terrible. Why mess up what nature has provided for us?0 -
Coconut milk and almond milk are acceptable alternatives also0

Try different soya milks, we tried a few before we found one we liked and it was one of the cheapest.
Almond milk is lovely, but too expensive for us to have all the time with the amount the kids drink.
We now use organic cows milk btw. Much better than std and the same price in Asda (and no I don't understand that either)Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Ive heard about that too. I read an article that said if you buy anything organic, it should be organic milk, because dairy cows are pumped full of hormones and thats why they think it could be attributed to the high rates of breast cancer in say the US and UK compared to Asian countries where in some the rates are much much smaller than here.
May as well stop drinking tap water, wearing cosmetics, eating meat and using plastics as well then. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, which can CONTRIBUTE to cancer risk are found in all those products and more. Oh, and that includes isoflavones in soy milk, which may be natural, but also mimics oestrogen and is classed as an EDC. EDCs are implicated in many diseases including breast cancer (and other cancers) and early puberty.
Differences in cancer rates between Asia and western countries are down to many factors not simply milk. For example obesity is a huge risk factor for breast cancer and we have higher obesity rates in the west.
The case for isoflavones in reducing breast cancer risk is shaky, as there are studies for and against, and, as far as I am aware, no meta-analysis has been done to compare the studies.
If you are going to make a major change in your diet for no other reason than thinking soy products are healthier then it's probably worth while looking at some of the research so you fully understand the possible benefits and risks.

The problem with soya milk and nut milks are they are high in sugars and if you are consuming them several times a day can lead to rapid tooth decay. It is particularly a problem in children who drink alot of milk , but a splash of soya in your tea or coffee is just as bad as a spoonful of sugar and a few drinks a day will cause a problem. http://cosmeticdentistofmichigan.com/2012/08/farmington-hills-dentist-soy-milk-may-lead-to-tooth-decay/
almond, coconut , rice milk are just as bad as regards sugar and many of the oat milks ditto. Most will have the equivalent of one to seven spoons of sugar a glass. Most soya milks are sweetened with sugar to make them palatable, but even the unsweetened have natural sugars.0 -
Soya milk certainly doesn't taste sweet (unless it's the sweetened variety!)0

Its not just the sugar , soy in itself is used by the bacteria in the mouth to produce acid to destroy teeth in a way that can't be done with animal eg cows milk http://news.yahoo.com/soy-milk-bad-teeth-122706648.html
This has been known about for a long time as babies on soy formula are very rpone to bottle decay which doesn't happen with breast milk or cow milk based formulas.0 -
I drink soya milk or occasionally almond milk (which tastes better but is not as good nutritionally) or, very rarely, oat, rice or coconut milk, which all taste nice but of those 3 only oat milk tastes anything like milk.0

The UHT tastes great in tea, strange how it goes in coffee. I once tried fresh soya milk and it was disgusting.thatlemming wrote: »It tastes exactly the same as normal milk, so to those people who said it tasted weird, !!!!!! were you drinking?
I have to have soy or almond as I'm lactose intolerant. Not sure it's any better or worse for me than normal milk, other than it goes all weird in coffee
If low carbing, soy is better than dairy.0
