  • Angela Knight was on the radio yesterday. She used to be the apologist for the bankers and was so good at it that last summer she got the job of representing the energy companies.

Solid wall insulation seems to be all up in the air again and she gave out an 0800 number, unfortunately I did not manage to make a note of it.
  • We had an EPC rating done and were quoted £8200 for 75 sq M External Wall Insulation.

I decided to pay in full rather than the energy payments and with the eco subsidy they said it will be £4000 but I have to pay the full amount upfront before any work is done ?

Does this sound reasonable and is it normal to make full payment upfront ?

Questioned it and they said they find it difficult to get the payment after the work is done sometimes and taking panels off the wall again is not easy.

Also once you sign is there a cooling off period ?

Anyone - Many Thanks in Advance

Sounds dodgy Raja,........ With Green deals on the way out or a new lengthy changeover to a new system. Give it a miss.

The max. deposit which a green deal installer is supposed to ask for is 25%

I'd suggest reminding the supplier about the requirements of this https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/69090/green_deal_code_practice_version_3.pdf

    Hi Ragastyle

There is normally a ten day cooling off period if you wish to change your mind well this is what the funders we use offer anyway might differ to the company you are going to use double check with them,

I would never personally pay 4k upfront for ewi what happens at the end if the insulation is not installed right or finished to a high standard ?

All the installs I have done not ever once have I requested full payment what happens if they all of a sudden go bump trust me there is going to be a few soon,

I would think as already said around 25% sounds about right.

    Hope this helps
  • I'm finding this whole process ridiculous and I've not even started it yet.

I'm trying to get a green deal assessment done so I can investigate internal solid wall insulation and no one will do the assessment.

Whats changed recently that states that assessors can only look at work they can complete (until after Feb '14)?

I'm in a solid wall rural property so want to get ECO funding before I start any work and it's killing me.

Anyone recommend anyone in the NW (near Warrington) that would do it?

    Cheer,

    Rick
  • I'm a Home Inspector and Energy Assessor. I started training to become a Green Deal Assessor in 2012. My course was in depth and scheduled to take several months - and I was already a qualified surveyor and energy assessor. I then heard of people without any previous energy or surveying qualifications becoming GDA's (Green Deal Assessors) in about 2 weeks. Since then, I have read a lot of bad press about the quality (lack of) of Green Deal Assessments, and in reading some of the above posts, this 'press' appears to be sadly true.
As is often the case, there will be many GDAs out there who are very well qualified, but some of those who completed a 'crash course' will taint the others.
Unless the home owner really wants Green Deal finance or a ECO grant, then there are cheaper methods of determining what is best for your property. Any Green Deal Assessor should know something about most of the improvement measures, and know some installation details about the most popular.
The domestic Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) shows recommendations for energy efficiency improvements and the likely cost savings to be made from each of the recommendations. You do not need a Green Deal Advice Report (GDAR) or the XML file to be able to determine the recommendations for your home.
Ask any local independent DEA whether they will give you advice based on an up to date EPC - you will need to pay the assessor, but not as much as for a GDAR, and the advice should be completely independent as they are rarely working for a supplier or installer.
Based on good advice from the EPC, the home owners could then opt for their own financial arrangements, use their local plumber etc or if Green Deal is best for their situation, have a Green Deal assessment carried out with their own up front knowledge from the EPC.
  • Well I had a good chat with a provider today and it is because of the government announcement that I can't get anyone to do an assessment. The solid wall element is the part thats been taken from the ECO funding so I'm screwed for now when I need the work doing...

    Brilliant

RajaStyle, this may be External Wall Insulation subsidised with ECO funding, rather than the £4000 payment on a Green Deal Finance Plan.

This would be subsidised because of the amount of "Carbon" that can be claimed. This Carbon is then sold to the energy companies to help them meet their ECO targets, hence why the low price.

Ensure the company are PAS2030 accredited- that's a requirement under the Green Deal Code Of Conduct.

    Hope it helps!
