http://www.yougen.co.uk/blog-entry/2282/What+help+can+I+get+with+heating+under+the+Affordable+Warmth+scheme%273F/
Obviously none of us know your personal circumstances BUT (and I hate to say this) if you judge from the facts such as they are:
The government must think you are asset rich and income poor.
So in a land, where our natural resources were squandered by the "baby boom" generation, the government would like you to down-size (or generate extra income).
At least they cannot impose a "bedroom tax" on you.
Did you manage to upgrade all your insulation last year when it was all free?0 -
Thanks for posting the link:)
I've been lucky over the years despite being made redundant twice in the eighties.
I wouldn't class myself as deprived or "poor". Over the years I have brought the house up to a reasonable standard eg double glazing, cavity wall etc.(all paid for!)
Unfortunately I am now retired and never got round to affording central heating.
I'm a victim of the endowment mortgages, kids at university etc etc where bank of Mum And Dad was run pretty low:(
Due to govt policy on womens retirement ages instead of us both retiring virtually together my wife had to wait another 2 years. This has had the effect our only income was my state pension plus app £25 weekly private pension. Consequently I am now on Pension Credit until my wife gets her pension next year when I'll lose the Pension Credit!!:(
My point is I should be eligible for help under the green deal umbrella but no!
I can't afford to install CH myself as I don't have the funds and I don't have an income to take out a long term loan(or the years left lol)
An air to wet heat pump would be app £10k to install but I won't get help due to my age/income always assuming I could find someone to do it?
In theory I would have got up to £3500 on the old Warm Front grants and I'm sure that would have gone a long way to virtually paying for central heating unlike the possible £1300 grant offered for renewable green stuff!!
Don't get me wrong I've never "scrounged" off the state but it's ironic now that I'm on a small benefit of £36 Pension Credit according to the govt. I should be entitled but sadly this isn't so!!0 -
My in-laws bought a new house in about 1969. It had a gas warm air system much like yours.
Presumably a warm air gas heating system is inherently a low efficiency, probably now illegal,. heating solution?
Any chance of an inheritance ?
One of the problems is that the heating technology is getting increasingly complicated.
Both I and a friend installed our own radiator central heating back in the 1970s and it is now so difficult to find someone one can trust to master the new technologies. Though I could still fit the radiators and have replacing radiators at my daughter's place.
There seems to be a shortage of skilled building workers in some parts of the country so simple profit maximisation means they want to pick the "low hanging fruit".
At least my PV panels are working OK unlike the household in today's BBC Radio 4 "You and Yours" programme:

Most of the inheritance went to pay off the endowment mortgage.
Should have got over £40k but only got £16K.
Still the house is mine:)
I see you can still buy central heating packs for around £1000 complete and I have considered doing the plumbing and leaving the boiler fitting to a registered fitter.
Before you say it I'm not in an area where the houses have shot up in value so it's not worth much more than the average terraced house in my area so there wouldn't be much left if I moved:(
I'm more annoyed with the govt. spouting all this green stuff telling us how we will all be better off and warmer when they set up a system that is difficult to access.
Just to add PV is no good as my roof faces completely in the wrong direction.
How much more unlucky can I get? lol
Don't know if I would get it anyway due to my age and I don't have any money up front to give.0 -
The late 60's & 70's installed blown warm air gas systems are in most cases still working and relatively efficient. Most 'service' contracts [particularly BG] have been telling householders for the last decade or more that the blown air & water parts are not replaceable and that householders must buy a new combi at vastly inflated prices, x3 times the real install price and dump the blown air / water.. lies.
Lies, because Johnson & Starley are still available and still relatively efficient. If I had a Johnson & Starley I'd put a less agricultural modern timer on it and get another 35 or more years out of it. Furniture anywhere you like because the registers don't take furniture space, instant .. .. unlike all wet combi systems, one replacement burner every 30 or 40 years. Its youe choice to change but you will never get that type of reliability with a wet system type boiler , regardless of make, if you already have a Johnson & Starley be careful for what you wish for - you just might get it !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I always thought ours was quite good from a cost point of view. Only trouble was it didn't heat the whole house and was a bit noisy.
Ours really needed replacing as the burner was way past its best and when the fan motor went for the second time we called it a day.0 -
All this green and less heating usage is all bull anyway. I've had loft insulation and modern uPVC windows and the house is still just as cold.0

cavity wall insulation will reduce all the heat lost in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls. Cavity wall insulation is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of energy you need to heat your home. It could save you around £115* a year on your fuel bills. It also lower the carbon emission from your home by around 610kg* and improve the energy rating on energy performance certificate.
