  • When I had my home insulated, the cavity filler and I agreed that the one living room fire place was out of action and were I to reuse it, I would install a wood burner of less than 5kW.
[ In reality I will probably fit a "sealed" log burner, that gets its air via a pipe directly from outside ].

So he wrote "out of use and sealed", against my form and we both stopped worrying about the big hole to be hacked in the exterior wall.

There are alternatives to what I know as "loft legs" for example:

    - I could have a loft conversion & a wet room for the price of that stuff John lad :D

  • Thought it might be helpful to point out that there is an annual admin fee for GD and a set up charge (might be worth mentioning in the myth buster so people don't get a nasty shock):

The Green Deal Finance Company state:

The GDFC is offering an initial interest rate for Green Deal Plans of 6.96% per annum. Each Green Deal Plan will also have a set up charge of £63 and an annual operating charge of £20.
The set-up, administration and interest rate costs for Green Deal Plans are fixed for the entire life of the Plan.

as a newbie I can't put the link but google Green Deal Finance Company and it is about third on the list. All Green Deal money goes through this company so worth a look if you are really interested in what is going on. Hope this is of use.

  • We were a little cautious about this deal and we had good reason to be. In a nutshell. British Gas send out someone to tell you what you already know about your house, in our case that the boiler has 'had it' - and that is all you get for you £125. You can add a proportion of the cost of the boiler replacement to your energy bill, but it is only a proportion and the maximum the Government will allow you to off-set is £1500. British Gas don't tell you this when you make the apt and pay your cash. The British Gas advisor that came to see me today said, and I quote "You do know that the debt stays with the house, would you want to buy a house with a debt like that attached to it" - his exact words. As British Gas are far more expensive than any other private heating engineer the £1500 (maximum) doesn't really cover it, our quotation, and we live in a small 3 bed terraced house, from BG was £5200 !!
My advice, use the £125 towards getting a local decent heating engineer to do it for you at his best price.

If there is a £1500 limit, does that mean I will be unable to change solid fuel CH for gas CH?

My situation is this. I'm on Pension Credit.
My (50yr old)warm air central heating system has long since broken down.
I'm relying on a gas fire in the living room and electric heaters in the others.
The house has cavity wall and double glazing.
I've tried to get someone to come out and install a complete central heating system under the ECO/Affordable warmth part of the green deal as I understand I may be entitled?
I've had one assessment but turned down??
All I get is when enquiring is "we don't do that" so is it more a case of "we just want to do the easy stuff like replacing a boiler because there is more profit in it" or is the govt. scheme a waste of time??

Under the old Warm Front scheme I would have been eligible for a grant!!
If anyone knows of someone who will do this, either a national company or locally in Northants please let me know before the winter comes again. thanks

No there isn't a £1500 limit, finance is capped to the amount that can be serviced by the calculated savings produced - the Golden Rule.

I am finding this green deal business a pile of shining shinola. I applied in Jan 2013 as my 14 year old boiler is on it's last legs and I don't have any capital as such to allow me to replace it. I am not on benefits. I got a response 3 MONTHS later asking for my address details, which I responded to immediately. Heard nothing again til 5 MONTHS later in August telling me a big demand on this and I would hear something when a trader, who has been passed my details, would deign to contact me. Still waiting.... .in meantime, the boiler is getting repaired weekly or more often under my maintenance contract.
  • I just had a call from a Swansea Call Centre ("No, I don't work for Nev, everybody asks that hahahahahaha") about the Green Deal.

She told me that I MUST get an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) or I'll be fined in 2016 for not having one. Council Tax will be rated on the energy performance of my property so I must have an EPC (or be fined).

She said I should get solid wall insulation and an A-rated energy oil boiler (I'd rather switch to wood-fired actually, but that fell on deaf ears) and then get (up to) £960 cashback (IN MY POCKET!!!! *pause for dramatic effect* - I'd rather it was in my bank, but there we are) and that's better than being fined in 2016 isn't it??!!

She then went off to "talk to my supervisor, he's so busy as you can imagine" (I'm just thinking of Nev on BBC3's Call Centre programme) so I logged on to the MSE website while she did that and read the Green Deal mythbusting page...

She came back: "All that it will cost you, upfront, is £299 and think of the £960 cashback you'll be getting (yeah, right) so it's nothing really."

You must be joking, said I, "I'm looking at a website that says the average charge is £120."

So she went back to talk to her supervisor ("he's so busy LOL") while I looked at the Energy Saving Trust, Government and Welsh Assembly sites and then, armed with the correct information, politely ended the call. ("Thank you for your call, I won't take up any more of your valuable time, goodbye," see, well brought up, I am. Sometimes. ;) )

I didn't get the name of the company, but the number she was calling from was 08435 600 056. I remain cynical about the Green Deal and it's cold callers like that one which keeps it that way.

I can't find anything that says Council Tax banding will be changing to being based on the EPC - so is that true? And will I be fined in 2016 for NOT having an EPC? I can't find anything out about that either (I'm not planning to sell or move, perhaps I'd be fined if I tried to do that without one.)

It is the UK that might get fined if it fails to get enough houses on the European Database of the thermal performance of its buildings.
Methinks we won't the the only state in the union that fails to achieve its 2016 targets.

Are you sure that number 08435600056 is correct - these social parasites, and sometimes criminals, have now learned to spoof caller display - I have just been phoned by "02070609965" and thinking it was a London number, found myself talking to someone in South Africa who was "doing a survey".

Have you already noticed that having an EPC that is worse than "D" can already disbar you from some things ?
