Send an e-mail from your own identity via the file menu and switch identity to your newly created sons account and logon via the web to see if it got there.

I give up, thanks you a million for your help but for some reason it is not working and I have been doing this for 2 hours now so will leave it for now to get dinner ready....

It means OE's connection to the mail server, not your overall internet connection. It helps if you post the exact, full error message, ideally using copy and paste to avoid spelling mistakes.

Are you using any kind of email scanning? This is sometimes provided by your anti-virus software. If so, disable it as it might be causing the problem and provides no additional protection against viruses.

I'm confused - are you using the virgin server or the ntlworld server?

ntl because virgin says still ntl until we give out the virgin email addresses...

Ntl.....so the settings on the e-mail account are.
POP3.ntlworld.com and smtp.ntlworld.com, try these in the settings in outlook express

and if you want en e-mail address for your son then you have to log into your ntlworld account and create an e-mail address for him there, then configure it through outlook express

done that now the box of user name and password keeps coming up,I put it in and it comes up again...

Are you using the name and password from the new account you created with virgin or the name and password from the new ntl account that star trekker told you to set up
