I am another one who did it; went on holiday to switzerland, came back with the decision made to look for another job. 2 weeks late I could not stand it anymore & gave a weeks notice. Finished on Friday, interview Tuesday, job offered Thursday! A bit of a gamble but was worth it. If you know you can get temp work then you can manage - I decided I would rather work in Mcdonalds!0

Can you not wait for your boss to die off. Surely at 70 he doesn't have much longer to go?

I don't know of any websites that tell you what you would be good at. But how about just reading through loads of job adverts on monster or the job centre website. You might see something you hadn't thought of that might interest you.
Other than that, what do you like to do? if you had no financial restrictions, you could do anything at all with your days, what would you do? Or even just narrow it down to simple things like.. do you want to work with people or be shut as far away from the general public as possible, do you want an office job or an out of office job, do you want to travel a bit or is staying close to home important. I might be talking out of my bottom but asking these questions helped me to decide where to go with my life.:A

Just to back track a bit. You mentioned that you lost your job whilst on maternity leave last year. Did you do anything about that? Ie did they follow all of the procedures to ensure that they sacked you legally? If not maybe you have a case for unfair dismissal?
And likewise with your current employment, your firm should have a grievance procedure which you should look at perhaps? What he is doing is harassment and you should not have to put up with it. Is there a union where you work who you could talk to? I am not saying that you shouldn't leave, but if it is only this ONE person who is making the job impossible, then maybe complaining may get him to back off?
If none of the above is relevant, then my suggestion would be to
a) don't leave without another job to go to even a temp one
b) start to rework your finances now to see if you could manage short term on just one wage. Then if there is a delay in finding work you are already used to living on one income.
The very best of luck with this. I had a boss who would say one thing verbally, which I would agree to, but then twist the meaning when it was put down in writing, so it made me look bad. He was a complete git. But I managed to get promoted away from him, so I 'won' in the end!

Could you not go full-time with that fag smuggling business you were doing a few weeks ago? :rotfl:Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)

I won my tribunal twelve months later in Feb this year and was awarded £22,000 for unfair dismissal, constructive dismissal, sex discrimination, unfair deduction of wages and failure to follow the statutory grievance procedure. Unfortunately they put themselves into administration so I got no money! Just my day in court!

Could never got through that ever again, one of the most stressful things I have ever dealt with. Actually he has a heart of gold, just stuck in the dark ages and paranoid and controlling about his baby (company). He is supposed to be retiring but can't give it up. Plus he owns the company!

We have managed in the past twelve months with only one wage, BUT things are just starting to get easier, in that we are starting to make inroads into our debt, so to give up now would be a bit too stressful I think.

Plus he asks me every week if I am staying
So next time tell him no, and see what he says.
