I got a letter saying I'd been caught doing 36 in a 30. Well, it was at the top of my road, and all my friends take the mickey out of me for driving so slowly everywhere. So, I went and measured the lines, did a web search for how to calculate the speed, and I was doing 32 - not 36. A friend who is a traffic cop said that if the speed is different at all, they can't do you. So, I sent off for the photographic evidence - used it to check their calculations - wrote to them again stating my case - they wrote back saying they were right - since then the camera has been removed! So, in my last letter I questioned this. Letters have been going on for 5 months, I think they only have 6 months to charge me.
But I wonder how many people pay up - and suffer abuse in this post! - when they were quite possibly not speeding!
apparently even if you were going faster than they say, they can't do you for it!
I have had a clean license for 25 years and never made an insurance claim either, I don't even believe I was doing 32 mph. I shall fight this to the bitter end - even if it is a fair cop - you should all verify the details of the speed cameras claim.0 -
FYI
I thinks it's best to say a "friend" has had the following experence...
He was abroad when his car was clocked in the UK well over the speed limit. He returned to find a letter with good news waiting. He asked for a photo to track down the culprit and provided proof that he was indeed away. (photocopy of passport with dated stamps)
He was unable to ID the driver as the visor was down and you couldn't see his face. He wrote back by within 48 hours to this effect. They took him to court and he lost. He had 3 points and £400 fine plus £400 legal fees. They claimed that he should have spent more time trying to track the guilty person down.
Message: to those who use this sight to beat big brother, I hope this helps you from falling into the same trap as my "friend". To those with silly and unhelpful message syndrome: I hear you come up with all sorts of robotic responses like don't speed have you learnt your lesson etc, I have only this to say. Moral of the story is get a speed gun detector coupled with a GPS tracker and never be caught again, the fine was a drop in the ocean and my "friend" rather enjoyed testing the system. I'm sure I've made plenty of spelling mistakes for you to focus your pea sized brain on- I'm dylexic and way beyong caring!!!0 -
how were you caught, you could ask to see the calibration certificate of the machine that caught you, they should be done daily, and most are not.
points are very easy to accumulate these days with more and more speed cameras and traps,as the guy says he needs his liscence for his work so i imagine he drives a lot more miles than the do gooders telling him to pay up.
i drive a lot of miles being a mobile service engineer, sometimes you dont realise you are over the speed limit, your mind is on the job.
we are all human and we all make mistakes, thats why we are all on MSE after all is it not?...work permit granted!0 -
I don't think name calling is necessary but if you were caught speeding then i don't think you have any real grounds for complaint.
The only advice is to slow down but if this 3 points will cost you your licence then perhaps being banned will be the only thing that will teach you about speed limits.
I think you need to get down of your high horse for a few minutes. There have been hundreds if not thouusands of cases where people have been wrongly accused of speeding through errors made by the police. It could happen to you one day even if you weren't speeding.0 -

Well guys - I don't know about free but I used a company called Driving Law http://www.driving-law.co.uk/offences/speeding.asp
They sorted a mitigation letter for me and gave telephone support for a fairly reasonable fee (can't remember the exact amount think it was about £60). The letter was written specifically for my case (it clearly wasn't a formula letter) and worked!0 -

my mate is up in court this tuesday, he had 6 points, got caught going over the limit taking him upto 9 points and he is being done, so don't think that you are safe if you only have a few points and get caught again because you are not, if you want confirmation of this, call the dvla
That's because your mate is a stupid tit who got caught doing a really excessive speed that's a guaranteed ban, such as 60 in a 30, 100 on a motorway.0 -

It saddens me that a site as good as this should attract so many hateful people. So you're a saint and never find yourself in any unfortunate situations. That's great, but what weird pleasure do you get from slagging someone off like this? It's not very bight, is it, particularly when the party involved may not even be guilty.
Come on, folks, stop hating!0 -
I am amazed at how much urban myth is still doing the rounds.
If anyone is truly interested in the whole process, what to expect, etc....then I offer http://www.5ive-o.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12 as a site/forum to visit.
The above forum is populated by folk in all professions, including police, magistrates, and a million others of all ilk.
and between everybody, the bull#### is well and truly exposed.
worth a visit, even Pepipoo members can be counted amongst those contributing.
which rather lays to rest any thoughts of one-sidedness?No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
