Longer than 'knock at the door run across the road' only to knock on another door wait for that person to answer give them someone elses parcel while the person you were supposed to give the parcel too puts down an item of clothing that was being stuffed in the washing machine and walks 50odd ft to the door and stand there a bit looking confused as there is noone there.

More than 10 seconds would be nice.. I used to collect payments for a window cleaner and would knock twice and wait about 30 seconds, gives people time to finish a pee and get to the door.

30 seconds per packet gives 20 minutes on 40 packets, plus traveling time
you may not agree but RM simply dont give that sort of time per item

Just asked OH, he says at his office (it could be different for other places) undelivered packages have to be taken to a local post office (a driver will then collect it and return it to the sorting office) or directly back to the sorting office. Having said that, a 'signed for' package shouldn't be put back in a postbox.

    it varies across the UK
just to be clear. Recordeds are no more important than normal mail.
do not confuse recorded with Special Delivery

I keep thinking what the sorting office man commented on when he said usually if the postman gets no answer then he puts a red card through the door, that ok and understandable.....but then he said the postman will have put the packet into the nearest pillar box so it would go straight back to the sorting office.

Do they really do this??<I would of thought they would have taken it back to the sorting office if no one is home?,very confusing.

well break it down.say you have a delivery span of 12 miles around the office
how would you get the items from those delivery staff back to the office?
If those posties are on foot then what?
pay drivers to go around collecting them?
have them go back on foot, bus or what?
bear in mind you would be cutting their delivery to allow for this time.
so using the 'pouch' system isnt perfect, but it saves a ton of time/money
that said it is something that is being cut down/phased out where possible
it was/is more prevalent under the older system of foot deliveries and van duties doing the large packets
  • Well today Im not able to get to the sorting office(damm car)but a friend will take me tomorrow instead.
When I last put in the item number on the track and trace website it said "there is no data available, please try later" or words to that effect, now when I put my number in it says

    "
Item ****************(Ive removed the number) was posted at 2 - 3 Lyttleton TS18 5LE on 16/01/13 and is being progressed through our network for delivery. "

This is the same message I read when I first put in the item number a good few days ago.

Just wish I could of gone today instead of tomorrow but if it isnt there i,ll ask them for information on how to complain.

Good job my wages have arrived in the bank, its the only thing which has put a smile on my face!!

Thanks so much for your link custardy, you are right I should complain now rather than leave it any longer.

I know Im going to wonder for the rest of my life what the heck it was,how sad is that??:(
I remember sending my mum,God rest her soul,£50 to tide her over many years ago(probably around 1995)stupidly I sent the money in cash:eek: and she never recieved it,sometimes in a fleeting moment I wonder where the heck that went too! That one I put down to ignorance and stupidity, this latest one is not my fault(but still damm annoyed just the same).

Thanks to everyone who answered my post,I really appreciated all your views and suggestions.

If you are going to use a quote please use the whole sentence not just a select section..

I used to collect payments for a window cleaner and would knock twice and wait about 30 seconds, gives people time to finish a pee and get to the door.

And to have knocked and waited even 10 seconds for me to get to the door was longer than knock and run away.. we are supposed to grow out of that game many years before reaching an employable age.

you mean when I quoted your whole post?
    I think you mean highlight
So you are saying they didn't wait 10 seconds
yet they had crossed the road, knocked and your neighbour had got to the door in under 10 seconds?
