Just a quick point about that, they send it back on day 18, so it's only really 17 days, 16 when you take off day one when it can't be collected (as you have to wait 24 hours).

it would be 18 clear days from day of attempted delivery
the 24 hours you state is dependent on delivery office packet delivery method.
you can't speak for the whole UK,as it varies on many factors

It's because they haven't got the packages with them. Only certain employees can deliver packages (they have to be security checked or something), so if the postman posting the card isn't one of those employees, then he just posts a card through.

where on earth did you hear that one?

    well you shold be complaining
its an 18 day retention period
so it should be at least 18 days from day of delivery
though there is a grey area in the case of re deliveries

Why? That's what my postman told me when I caught him putting a card through without knocking on the door.

well he is an out and out liar!
Can I ask. Are you a main door or a flat?
In flats its common for cards to be left if access couldnt be gained the previous day(s)
however that has nothing to do with the tale your postie spun

Jeez maman, there was no need to quote me, if you had looked properly I was answering a previous poster. The link that custardly provided should show if it's been returned to the D.O or not.

Charges - I believe custardly meant those items of mail that have incurred a charge because of underpayment on stamps or customs charges. Everything else, 18 days...

Sorry:o I should have been selective in my quote. I just meant to use the bit about how long an item is held etc. and pointing out that it was unlikely to happen if it couldn't be found!

In a house. If he had had the parcel with him, why would he have bothered to fill out a card instead of ringing the door bell?
