Insuring 17 year old for first car!!

I'm trying to insure my extremely mature and sensible 17 year old son for his first car - what a nightmare! Unfortunately he is also diabetic, which either excludes him or pushes the premium into orbit. Any advice? Anyone heard of '17225'? and are they any good? Thanks so much!

Unfortunately being mature and sensible doesn't get you a cheaper quote.

    Try the 2 comparison sites - moneysupermarket.com and confused.com

The cheapest for me first year was norwich union (£1100 third party!) and 2nd year RAC (£700 third party) and the cheapest quote I've had this year is £525 (third party.)

So it's halved in 2 years. But that's only because I've shopped around every year.

It might be an idea for your son to take out 'Pass plus,' this got my quote down quite a bit. But as you can see, it didn't go any lower than £1000!!

My first car cost £1750 on insurance, I wouldn't want to know what it would have been if I had any medical conditions to declare

My son (albeit four years older) had a very good insurance as a new driver with Liverpool and Victoria, they also covered an additional driver at no extra cost and cover abroad.

Pass plus doesnt register with over half of the insurance groups.

We were told it would reduce any insurance. But it doesnt. I think it does on a slect few. Cant find which ones though.

Companies are not allowed to add additional fee's just because your son is diabetic. He must be controlled enough to drive or he will have a restricted licence which he renews every 3yrs. Either way they are not allowed to bump up the price.

A friend of mine was looking for insurance for her son - she tried Tesco and they were the cheapest. Also if your son in still a student try Endsleigh as they are special for students.

As a broker i understand tesco are the new "CIS" with lowest prices for younger drivers. Can i also reiterate an earlier point that an insurer cannot load for a medical condition - that contravenes Disability Discrimination Act. However, as with Sex Discrimination, if they can prove this is a "rating factor" they can adjust premium (or else all the boys would be suing as girls are 3 times cheaper!).

Also be a bit wary with Quinn - until very recently they had not filed any accounts to prove solvency and as such fell outside the protection of the FSA. Our broker company indemnity insurers said they would not cover us to offer Quinn unless anyone who we quoted them to signed a declaration which said they accepted a Quinn quote at their own risk which kind of speaks volumes...
