As a broker i understand tesco are the new "CIS" with lowest prices for younger drivers. Can i also reiterate an earlier point that an insurer cannot load for a medical condition - that contravenes Disability Discrimination Act. However, as with Sex Discrimination, if they can prove this is a "rating factor" they can adjust premium (or else all the boys would be suing as girls are 3 times cheaper!).

Also be a bit wary with Quinn - until very recently they had not filed any accounts to prove solvency and as such fell outside the protection of the FSA. Our broker company indemnity insurers said they would not cover us to offer Quinn unless anyone who we quoted them to signed a declaration which said they accepted a Quinn quote at their own risk which kind of speaks volumes...

Hi. Seen as though you work for a broker..

I've been getting quotes for my 3rd insurance year, I'm 20, and have a 1998 citroen saxo 1.1. Never had an accident, and the cheapest quote I have is £525. Not sure who with, it was someone on the phone but I have the ref no.
Elephant were the next cheapest, £545.

Still seems a lot of money, is it a decent price I have or can I get cheaper?

    Hi.
You don't say how much the cheapest is?
    What car it is? etc
Prices vary so much even by post code.
    Have you tried Virgin?
I haven't found cheaper for our motors.
BTW, i think it should be illegal to bunch everyone together like they do.
Just because some lads are loonys doesn't make them all the same.

    Hi

I am in the exact same position as you. My 17 year old is a learner driver and we are in the process of buying him a second hand fiesta. However the insurance is more than the car is worth! Cheapest quote we have had is £1600. Does anyone know if there are any other ways of getting the quote down, e.g putting our name as main driver on the insurance.

    Thanks

Thanks to all who've replied!! I was delighted to hear (and it's been confirmed by insurance company) that he won't be penalised for being diabetic as the DVLA had already done the checks and given him a short-term licence. That's brilliant news, so thanks. Good luck to all you young drivers (or parents who are forking out for it!) in trying to get affordable insurance!

Thats called fronting, is bloody easy to spot and is consequently fraud.

Although the quote is worth more than the cars worth, its insuring against the damage he will more than likely do to either other cars, pedestrians or buildings.

You are just going to have to take the hit in the first few years.

"damage he will more than likely do."

You're just as bad as the insurance companies coming out with comments like that. Being 17 doesn't make you a dangerous driver. It's unfair discrimination.

I didnt think being diabetic made a difference. Im 23 diabetic with a 3 year rescricted licence 4 years no claims and drive a sporty coupe. I pay £330 fully comp -£60 quidco so £270. Only problems is when buying car insurance online if you answer yes to any medical conditions they ask you to ring a number and wont let you buy online as I really didnt want to miss out on my £60 quidco I answered no then rang them up with my policy number and asked them to add that I was a type 1 diabetic, They asked all the usual questions like how many units I take a day and it didnt go up at all, Im with the AA

What an unnecessarily aggressive reply! The question I asked was an innocent request to anyone who had any honest ideas to our problem. My son is just as likely (or unlikely, as anyone of any age to cause damage whilst driving). Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

I don't see why you think it's agressive.

No-one said you were intending to perpetrate fraud but I think the reply supplies you will very important information, namely that you cannot falsely represent the situation.
My son is just as likely (or unlikely, as anyone of any age to cause damage whilst driving).

The statistics that insurance companies use definitely show that there is a link between age and accidents.
So the insurance company will definitely take a view that a young person is much more likely to have a accident than someone whose middle aged with 20 years driving experience.

You may not like the way they run their businesses but you're pretty much stuck with it because they all work on claims experience.

One thing insurers could not be accused of is bunching everyone together. The lengthy online forms or telephone quote calls enable them to build a risk profile that is more or less unique for that person. The factors include:-

    Age
    Occupation
    Gender
    Location
    Type of vehicle
    Engine size
    Previous claims.
    Previous convictions
    Value of vehicle
    Average annual mileage
    Marital status
Length of time driving license held / type of license
Modifications (if any) to the vehicle
    Additional drivers
Policy excess (additional voluntary excesses will reduce the premium)

In addition, they have the Thatcham insurance groupings for each car / derivative. This is based on:-
Cost to repair that car (Parts for Japanese cars tend to be more expensive for instance).
Engine / BHP for that car.
Security for that vehicle. As an example, Lotus Elises used to have very poor security in relation to their value / desirability. They went up a group or two because of this.
