I hope to get my lad on my car insurance - he will be 17 at Xmas. I was wondering about Direct Line as they allow named drivers to build their own no claims. I don't want to buy a 2nd car and am happy for him to use mine until he is in a position to get his own. Has anyone used Direct Line like this for young drivers?

I got a quote from direct line (renault clio), having my son as a named driver and the quote came in at £1200 3rd P F&T. More expensive that having him as main driver via Quinn direct.

    Hi

I am in the exact same position as you. My 17 year old is a learner driver and we are in the process of buying him a second hand fiesta. However the insurance is more than the car is worth! Cheapest quote we have had is £1600. Does anyone know if there are any other ways of getting the quote down, e.g putting our name as main driver on the insurance.

    Thanks

Liverpool Victoria are about the cheapest we could find to have 17 year old son as a named driver but if he is really the main driver it is fraudulent and in the event of an accident if it was discovered that he was the main driver they wouldn't pay out. If he is to be the only driver on the policy, the cheapest we could find were Quinn direct. Don't know how good a company they are but they're cheap.

Does he actually *need* a car? Not many 17 year olds really do (I certainly didn't). I passed my test aged 17 and was a named driver on my Dad's Fiesta for a few years. Then I didn't drive whilst I was at university and in my first couple of jobs (no need to). I got my first car last year when I was 26 - the insurance is a lot lot less if you wait until you're over 25, plus I had a few years as a named driver on Dad's insurance with no claims on it. The money I saved in those years of not having a car to insure and maintain mean that I got through university (twice!) debt-free and could buy a house last year.

My brother was the same, but still isn't running a car and has no plans to. He's married with two children and must have saved a fortune over the years as he'd have paid a lot more for insurance as he's male.
  • I have heard that if a parent insures with National Farmers Union http://www.nfumutual.co.uk/you/motor-insurance/car-insurance.htm they will insure your 17 year old son for around £350. Never tried it myself but worth checking out.

I generally agree with FlameCloud..."misrepresenting" your situation is naughty, fraud, yada yada yada.

BUT putting him down as a secondary driver might be a good idea...if he actually were the secondary driver...if you could pursuade your son to be the secondary driver on your car for a year before he gets his own wheels, it could make a fair difference...Especially with Direct Line where he could build no claims (I think Quinn Direct do something similar too...)

I don't think it matters which company you are with as a named driver to build a no claims up. Some, like Direct Line, do it "officially" but I know when I was shopping around for the insurance for my first car last year I was asked how many years no claims I had by several companies - they needed a letter from the previous insurer as proof. It wasn't any great hassle getting it done.
  • try doing this fully comprehansive. most road accidents are caused by boys in bangers, so even if it is a banger go fully comp!!

Just try as many companies as you can for quotes ( for some it makes a big difference (much cheaper) putting one or two parents on as additional drivers ;).

Elephant.co.uk were, and still are the cheapest for me. Even though I work for a different insur. co. and get a staff discount!
