Now I have a dilema and I want everyone's opinions..
I have £50 a week to live off - this includes food, shopping and anything else I can think of. Now, for a while I've been wanting to buy some new running shoes as I need/want to start running again. I've been looking around at different prices for running trainers, and the lowest price I can find is £40. Should I buy them? I need to start getting fit again. I'm joined at a gym at the moment, and this runs out in about a week I think. I am not joining again as its really expensive and I can't afford it. I want to go running as its free and great exercise. I'm just worried about the expense, and if I can manage food shopping on £10 for one week?!

Think what I would do just for the month, is buy a pair of cheap trainers (under £5) and try to save £10 from each of the following weeks towards your running shoes.

Would like to join in. Am also going to try to only spend 100 pounds on food till end of month. Always end up topping up with credit card. Last month we had no fruit or vegetables for over a week and I ended up craving lettuce which is not usual for me! Has to be done I suppose - I bought a load of fruit juice with vitamins in it from Lidl to last over these five weeks just in case. Thanks to everyone on the thread, reading it has inspired me to get going.

I would also like to join in (as well as doing the unnecessary one) Unlike everyone else, this will probably be my best month financially incoming this year.:o , admitted this is due to getting an extra weeks benefits and child benefit TWICE:j . But in my calculations I have set £193 of that aside for every thing due at at beginning of june BEFORE i get paid.
So I have per week £44.45p for shopping and what ever, this is to feed myself two permanent children, one occasional child, a cat and a temporary dog (been dog sitting for the ex all month).

    Week 1 so far £18.02
This covers my unnecessary spends too.
£2.52 dog food (tinned) still got lots of dry here.
£2.32 on bread mixes :rotfl: :rotfl: this is gonna be fun.
    £8.71 food shopping

Meal plan so far with what I bought in
Sunday evening Jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings (sweetcorn, beans and/or cheese)
Monday lunch bacon butties (made using the bread i am going to keep kids busy making on monday:rotfl: )
Monday tea sausage mash and beans
Tuesday Spaghetti bolognese with garlic bargette.

Till kids come home tomorrow (Sunday evening) I am just consuming last of the old food no matter what it is (lots of egg on toast and cheese on toast).

£26.43 left to see me through till the 9th.

    6th may
Just spent another £13.77 in Asda (only went for coffee), but a bit more can now be added to my meal plan.

So 6th May £12.66 left till 9th May Also going to start a £2 savings so lets say £10.66 left.
    1066 my eye my eye...:rotfl:

Arg no, forgot about my bookclub so thats another £6.97

Leaving me with £3.69 till the 9th.

If you bought the trainers, could you do a store cupboard challenge that week and only buy the bare minimum (bread/fruit/veg etc)?

Try it, and if it gets REALLY tight, 'borrow' a tenner from the next week to spread the cost. As long as ur total spend at the end of the month comes out within budget, u'll be fine... And think of the money u will have saved from not joining the gym again.
