  • We have been considering equity release and are shocked by high interest rates. If we borrowed £35,000, based on the value of our home, we would owe £70,000 in ten years' time.
Why can't equity release companies charge reasonable interest rates?

Wouldn't it be a good idea for equity release companies to buy people's houses then charge them a low rent until they die or go into residential care?

Pay mums to stay at home, :)

Whether or not the principle is good, in the interests of equality it should also apply to dads. Two parent families would then need to choose which parent stayed at home.

War is unwinable. Allow local authorites to substitute council tax with revenue raised by selling restricted drugs, undercutting street prices. Gain the revenue; gain the savings by avoiding police costs; control quality and gain the savings from health service. Make criminals redundant. License users and enforce preventive medicals.

If licensing the sale of recreational drugs is such a great idea, how come there's such a huge problem with alcohol abuse and binge drinking?

Most FRESH flavoured chicken -ideal for sandwiches(eg.Tikka slices)-is imported-HOW CAN IT BE FRESH!
We have a wealth of UK based talent able to produce this. There is a market to fill.
Entrepreneur/co-operative/allotment based community project=fresh locally sourced produce=financial good sense.
  • A public bank for the people.
We own big stakes in RBS, LLoyds yet we do not force them to set a certain % of their loans/investments within the UK. They are free to invest OUR deposits abroad and gamble it on the markets. This does not benefit the real economy in the UK.
  • Shops and supermarkets should have to display the same unit pricing for all products of the same type to allow consumers to quickly and easily assess which is better value.
  • BOGOFs and multi-buy offers on foods disadvantage single people and encourage waste. ALL such offers should be deemed to establish the product's marginal price. So if the second item is free, the retailer must sell a third, forth ... tenth at that same price (£0.00).
  • Put a tax on packaging which doesn't biodegrade quickly and COMPLETELY, pushing the price of packaging things needlessly to be financially unsustainable for supermarkets and forcing them to be accountable for what ends up in landfill.

Get rid of child benefit. Those who can't afford children shouldn't be having them! And related: give tax discounts to couples who do not have children and who therefore do not draw upon health and education facilities. It's time to get real!

More coordinated utilisation of schools across England, so there is less duplication and more sharing of resources. A multiplication in providers will probably mean a reduction in efficiency, so govt. needs to make sure there's not too many schools in some areas and not enough in others. Moreover, fee-paying and independent (which also receive benefits, like charitable status, from govt.) should give as much as possible (in terms of lesson plans and sharing sports facilities) to state sector.

Allow public access to school sports facilities out of hours. Most are lying empty half the time. That way local govt would save a fortune.
