I was going to swap over to these today after seeing the cheap energy club special rate.

Not any more! After reading the above reviews discussing the deposit they can go sit and spin. I would save £251 by switching to them but they want £215 for switching. Where is the money saving on that? Not to mention if they didnt collect the DD on the agreed date (BG have done this 4 times to us so far!) I'm guessing they could argue themselves out of returning your deposit....:money:

I'll be going with OVO where I will only save £225, but with the cashback I'll be better off in year one anyway. I may not go with MSE club though because I'm not sure if I want them getting £11 from the referral by helping sainsburys fleece people...May check out quidco etc instead.

I am pretty appalled that nothing to mention the deposit was posted anywhere on the energy club pages or promotional email by the official team (that I could find).
I'm only new posting here but I thought things were ran differently... focusing more on the consumer....

I wish I had read this forum first before joining sainsburys today. It looks like I'm stepping out of the frying pan into the frying pan after being with first utility who are not fit for purpose. It seems the whole country is being run by greedy swine's who can,t run companies properly. I am going to cancel the changeover asap..
It seems martin lewis is getting bag handers for his running these publicity
adds... He needs to get his facts together before putting pen to paper.IMHO.

  • Just what is the deal with this so called deposit. Having moved from Sainsburys to EDF some 3-4 years ago (I think they were together then) I have been more than happy. EDF kept my business as I didn't like the feedback of those new entrants....but the Sainburys offer would knock £12 a month off for me even from EDF Blue+Price Promise May 2016.

EDF have been the last to move but not far enough IMO. I've had DD for the last 27 years....and always been in credit...but what's to stop them asking for a deposit?

Ovo is a great company to deal with but bear in mind they have a £60 tariff exit fee. Companies like E.oN only charge £5 per fuel if you leave. It really depends on how much more you think energy prices will fall.

We switched to sainsbury's energy through simply switch on TCB in January. There was a very slight hitch in setting up our account but sainsbury's kept us fully informed every step of the slight hiccup. Excellent customer service. Further follow up call today to check we our happy. I replied 'well a few nectar points we be nice for our inconvenience' but advisor said they were not allowed to do this because of Ofgem rules but said would we be happy with £25 credited to our account instead. What do you think I said? Lovely phone call for about 30 seconds work!

Sainsbury state in their terms and condition that the do a credit check. I was going to go with them 6 months ago and did not read the small print.
I think the terms and conditions of this new deal shoul be made very clear.

If I joined them I could save £55.00, but I've seen their welcoming letter - it's more like a letter to someone who has defaulted. I am not overexagerating.

Did they ask either of you for a deposit or is it credit checked based?

Sainsburys are acting on behalf of British Gas. Prior to moving suppliers I had been a British Gas customer for donkeys years. I've had no credit issues.
I tried to switch to Sainsburys. I was not aware in their terms and conditions they did a credit check. They asked for a deposit of several hundred pounds.
To me it makes no sense why I should have been asked to give money up front.

Here are some details reference the deposit taken from their website..

    'List of tariffs
2.1 Our prices for supplying gas and electricity are set out in our list of tariffs. You'll find this on our website at sainsburysenergy.com/EnergyTariffs. Or call us on 0800 316 0316 and we'll post you the list.

2.2 Our prices and conditions sometimes depend on how you pay. Before we enter into the contract with you, we look at any information we have. That might include what we know about how you've paid our bills in the past, anything you've told us, and any information that a licensed credit-reference agency has given us. We use all this information to decide how likely we think it is that you'll be able to pay your bills. Our decision can affect how we ask you to pay. For example, it might affect how often we send you bills. We might also ask you to pay a deposit or use a different kind of meter.,

I think martin lewis should amend his publicity about sainsburys stating their policy of using the mickey mouse credit companies.

In principle this seem fair enough....but from reading here it appears that a deposit request is not abnormal!
