They've just called me and said all first meter readings need to be given over the phone on 0800 316 0316 (or 0800 107 4 985 as MSE advise) until the previous supplier has confirmed the final bill. Only after the final bill has been given, then you can start giving them online.

There was no mention of this anywhere previously!!!

There was earlier in this thread ;)

I think we all read it. The point is that Sainsbury's should be on top of this.
People shouldn't need to come to this thread to discover the telephone number they should ring - to correctly do a meter reading.

Of course I can't just phone up as well.
I'm at work and I don't have the meter readings to hand.

On both initial occasions I took the readings - fired and forgot.

I didn't write them down on paper.

I have submitted my gas reading over a week ago on their automated line, but nothing has appeared in my online account to say they have applied it my account, so telling people to call is probably a red herring. They have though managed to take my first direct debit payment today, for both fuels. Funny how they manage to take your money but not actually deal with the customer or set up their account properly. Shock

anyone know how to get your electricity meter point number in a format that you can type into a phone? Got numbers on the meter but they have letters as well. Apparently it's on the letter that Sains send you, but they haven't sent one for my electricity so can't even attempt to give a meter reading. Just tried calling and got told that waiting time was at least 30 minutes. Is this what MSE call 'we've made sure there are sufficient customer service resources in place'??? F'in appalling.

    Hi Steve

Your MPAN doesn't change when you move suppliers - it is a 13 digit number, sometimes referred to as your supply number. You just need digits which run along the bottom (as per this image).

So where is that found please? Sure isn't on the front of my electricity meter. All there is is the serial number of the meter itself.

Would that be the number that you can only get off your supplier or off a bill? Would that be the supplier that has 1 hour waits on their phone line and who you advise that you can use the automated meter reading line for, but that you need the MPAN number to leave the meter reading?

Would that be the MPAN you can get off an old bill from my old supplier, but that I can no longer access because apparently my old supplier thinks they don't supply me any longer and have closed my online account, yet my new supplier is yet to contact me to confirm I am their customer?

I am with British Gas and have a smart meter and a home hub to allow me to control my heating over WiFi. Does anybody know if Sainsbury will use the smart meters in the same way as BG please?

Hi - did anyone find the answer for this - tried to phone sainsburys yesterday but after 15 minutes on hold gave up. That plus the feedback on this thread is kind of giving me cold feet about switching to them

Hi there - you can switch to Sainsbury's, but your smart meters wouldn't retain their 'smart' functionality - you'd need to read and provide the numbers manually.

If you're unable to locate this with your supplier, you can get this from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) who is responsible for the distribution network for your area. Full details of the contact numbers are available via our FAQ (How do I find my existing supplier)

    Hope that helps.
  • Just thought I'd mention that I've also had issues while switching to Sainsbury's Energy.

Switched at the end of January and have yet to successfully submit a meter reading. I've tried online twice in the last week and after an initial 'Thank you for your reading' email, there is a 'There was a problem with your meter reading' email. I've tried phoning the enquiries number on the website only to be told there is a 25-30 minute queue, despite trying at different times of the day.

    In short, a complete shambles!

Found the phone number for automated submission on this forum (0800 107 4 985), which for some reason is only advertised on one very hard to reach page of their website, and now just need to find out my MPAN before I ring again. Hopefully I can sort this out tonight, but what a mess!
