  • I was with OVO for a year and all was fine until I left.
OVO continued to collect my Direct Debit and did not seem keen to return this and my credit balance, they said it would take a further 7 days, still waiting!

Almost a year with them now. Their customer service has been near fautless for me & I'll be renewing with them (sadly on higher rates) although others will have lower rates

  • Any feedback on how efficient Ovo are when you request a refund when you are *not* leaving them?

Never did that, as I always kept my DD amount at a realistic level to cover the annual cost. However, when I did leave them for another (cheaper) supplier, the small credit balance I had with them was returned within a week or so of me leaving.
Besides, you get 3% interest on credit balances anyway. Not a lot when it's divided by 12 for the monthly figure, but better than nothing.

  • And, from what I believe, the 3% is tax free. Tried them a few years back to assess the competition, interesting concept - no issues with requesting refunds. From what I've heard though, they seem to have a quite a high turn over of staff, so whilst they are extremely friendly, they might not be the most knowledgeable about the energy market.

I had no problems at all. As they are paying 3% interest on the balance, I think they are only too keen to give you your money back.

I've just noticed that my renewal rate offered is much lower than the same package on the website for new customers, is this normal for energy suppliers to do?

    Offered:
    elec: 12.16p/kWh + 27.40p/day
    gas: 2.72p/kWh + 27.40p/day

    on website:
    elec: 14.34p/kWh + 28.77p/day
    gas: 3.1p/kWh + 28.77p/day

Edit: oh the prices seem to vary based on usage

I think it's unlikely you are getting a preferential rate as an existing customer so it's possible that you are being offered a different tariff to the one you were looking at on their website.

Just to confuse matters further, VAT may, or may not, be included in the rates being compared. e.g. 27.40 p/day (first quote) + VAT = 28.77 p/day (second quote).

Nope it's the same tariff but the price fluctuates. If I just do post code/house type/rooms I get one quote; if I edit the quote & enter estimated meter readings I get different rates for the same tariff...pretty dodgy

I can only guess that you are, in fact, being offered different tariffs, according to their best estimates of your consumption in each case. I would say that estimates based on previous consumption (in the same property) are more accurate than estimates based on the property-type.

Might be worth a phone call to Ovo to see what is the best rate they can offer you and confirm the name of the tariff they are quoting for.
