  • SP's calculation assumes that you will revert to paying at the high variable rate from October 2020, since your current tariff expires in September. Of course, you will probably switch to a decent fixed rate, either with SP or somewhere else.
So their calculation of your Direct Debit is rubbish.
You could switch to their April 2021 Tariff now - without penalty - if you wish, provided that you do it via moneysavingexpert.

Currently on British Gas Dual Temporary May 2021, as in a new build property and just moved in.

Thinking of switching to Super Saver April 2021 B4 as it's the cheapest option for me and would save me hundreds a year. Anyone recommend? I'm seeing comments about SP switching your tariffs throughout the contract above on here and that you have to contact them to move it back to your tariff, could this happen to me?

Does anyone know if Scottish Power's 'Fix for Longer February 2021' is still going?
The reason I ask is that I'm trying to unravel my 80yr old mothers energy bills. She was on the above fixed rate, but for some reason it changed to the Standard Tariff last July.
She's not aware why and I'm trying to make sense of her bills before I speak with them tomorrow.

Unexpected switching of tariffs has never occurred for me, but unasked for changes in Direct Debit have occurred (with prior notice) - they try to come up with a prediction, in such a way that it maximises your balance with them. So you change the Direct Debit to a more suitable figure on their website.

Their Tariffs are mostly for 12 months - so it seems unlikely that February 2021 would still be available.
Of course if your mother was taken off it in error, then they should put her back on it (and repay a chunk of money).
If you fail to get anywhere with SP and can't face the delay etc of going through a complaints procedure, then there is always a switch to April 2021 available via moneysavingexpert.com it works out very slightly cheaper for me.

I've just got off the phone to them.....apparently they finished this fixed rate early!
They won't accept a complaint as they had written to my mother advising this. However, how is she expected to understand the nuances of a complicated bill?

When they contacted your mother to advise her the fixed rate was ending, it probably stated that in pretty simple terms and that she'd go onto their standard tariff unless she chose another fixed rate tariff. Also, nowadays electric & gas bills have to state on them that you could save money by switching to another tariff with their supplier and show the costs of it. So, if she's had bills since then, unfortunately, I don't think arguing about her not understanding the nuances of a complicated bill will really get you anywhere.

There is no harm in you still firing off a complaint (make sure the email/letter is headed 'Complaint') to them about ending the tariff early, and saying as she has been paying at the standard tariff for over 6 months she clearly didn't understand their letter, this is what is unfair, she's been overpaying through the winter months because they ended her fixed tariff. After 8 weeks you can then take the complaint to OFGEM. You probably won't get anywhere but no harm in trying. First thing to do is get on a comparison website and get her a new tariff so she's not overpaying at the standard tariff for any longer.

I was actually angry at being told point blank that a complaint would not be accepted.
A quick look at their complaints procedure told me I need a complaint reference number, so I rang back and spoke to a chap who was a bit more receptive. He actually logged the complaint and gave me a reference number; they say they will ring me back on the 12th, so we'll see.
I'd already checked on a comparison website, and she could be saving over £300 a year versus the standard tariff she is currently on.

  • I'm on SP Sep 2020 deal, but looking at Cheap Energy Clubs comparison, there is a better deal (Apr 2021).
Is it possible to transfer from one SP deal to another SP deal mid contract (6 months to go) without a £60 penalty ?
Also if you can, i guess you wouldnt get the cashback lol ?

No idea on cashback, but it usually forces you to agree to a useless dumb smart meter contract obligation.bribe !
