Glad you found our MSE Collective tariff okay MoneyMate. We don't currently have another MSE Collective on offer. Our last one was withdrawn from sale on 22 February 19.

Hi Malc, when did Eon stop letting you port your tariff when moving house? I have moved house with Eon before (including to houses not with Eon at the time of the move) and managed to port my tariff but this time round they aren't letting me port. They quoted the terms and conditions at me, which when I've checked all other tariffs with Eon its the same for all tariffs - which suggests that they no longer let you port a tariff?

I signed up to the MSE collective tariff in February and checked it let you port, which it did (and MSE CEC team have confirmed) but Eon aren't letting me port it to my new house now I have moved

Customer outflows from Eon are growing at an alarming rate, with the supplier unable to fully replace the losses with new customers.'

I am hoping someone can help me. I understand that I am on Eon's Economy 10 rate, however my bill says I am on "Energy Plan Assist". Can you be on both at the same time, or are they different tariffs?

The reason I want to be sure is that, since I moved into my current home a year ago, my direct debit payments to Eon have been oscillating wildly. Despite Eon setting my monthly payment, it suddenly went from £40 a month to £180.

When I called Eon in Dec 18, I was told that this was because I was in debit, but if I paid the balance off, which I immediately did, my payments would only need to be £50 per month thereafter. Then the other day, just three months later, I was suddenly told my monthly payments need to go up to £173!

I live on my own in a two-bedroom flat with just one storage radiator switched on in Winter, I cannot justify keeping a water tank fully heated, so apart from a daily shower, do without hot water entirely. So apart from the storage heater, which should be using the cheap rate electricity, and cooking my evening meal, I am not a heavy user - and as a pensioner, I simply cannot afford these sudden 300% plus increases.

I asked Eon if they could check that I am being billed correctly, but they said if nothing was wrong, I would have to pay for the checking of my smart meter.

I know prices keep going up, but surely the whole point of Direct Debit is that the firm is supposed to average out your monthly payments over the year, to spread the additional cost of heating in the winter months?

I've used this method with other firms for 30 to 40 years, and never, ever have I had such wild fluctuations in my monthly bills. Are Eon known for poor estimation of usage?

And finally, as MSE don't include Economy 10 rates, it is all but impossible to compare rates between companies. Can anyone suggest what other companies might give better Economy 10 rates than Eon do?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Hello clairet707 and we spoke about this last week on a couple of other threads as below.

As I explained, tariff porting is possible under certain circumstances. Mainly remaining in the same electricity region; similar metering; moving to a property we supply or are in the process of taking over; and staying as dual fuel or electricity only. The transfer also needs to go through a specific online route looked after by our specialist Home Moves team

When we spoke last week, you were still responsible for the old property on the MSE Collective tariff and the new property was being supplied by another company. Have these circumstances changed? If not, we won't be able to port the MSE tariff.

Please let me know if anything has changed at your end.

Hello John McE and welcome to the Forums.

Energy Plan Assist is available to vulnerable customers with Economy 10 meters. Unit prices per kWh are cheaper than our Economy 10 tariff.

Our Monthly Direct Debits are based on current prices and past usage. The aim is to achieve as near as possible to a zero balance by the annual payment review.

It looks like the original payments were too low and weren't covering your usage. This will have caused the debt you mention. Thank you for clearing this balance so promptly. Although the payments were raised, it looks like the increase wasn't enough as they still failed to cover the ongoing usage leading to the request to put up your monthly payments to £173.

As you moved in a year ago, our initial assessment of the usage will have been based on the information held for the previous occupiers. Now you've been there a year, future assessments will be based on your usage as we'll have built up a picture of what you're using through the information held in your smart meter. This will be more relevant to you and help even out the payments.

I suspect the new £173 Direct Debit includes an amount to cover past under-payments. This will be spread up to the next review. At this point, the arrangement will be reset to cover usage only.

Once the balance has been cleared, you'll be able to use our online Direct Debit Manager. This lets you see if the payments are covering usage. If not, you can use this tool to alter the monthly payments so they better reflect the ongoing usage. Payments can be changed by up to 20 per cent up or down with meter readings; or by up to 5 per cent up or down without readings.

As a pensioner and on Energy Assist, you might be eligible for Warm Home Discount. Although we've closed the 2018/19 scheme (payment of £140), you can register an interest for 2019/20 through our website now.

Prices for Economy 10 tariffs aren't on either our website or the Price Comparison sites. You'll need to contact individual suppliers to find these prices.

Hope this is useful John McE. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

Thanks Malc for answering all my questions.

As the previous occupant of this flat spend a lot of time away, that might explain it, so all I can hope is that I will finally get some accurate estimates from E-on. Although since I lived in an identical flat on the floor below for the previous two years, I would have thought E-on would be able to use my energy usage there as a better guide.

Re. making individual payments, as I said in my initial post, I did that in December, only to be confronted with another big payment in March. So paying off the balance certainly didn't help in my case.

As I said before though in all the years I've paid my electricity by Direct Debit I have never, ever experiences such wild swings in my bills. And I've also never heard of any other company basing their estimates on a previous occupant's usage. And had it been based on my own usage in the previous year instead, I presume none of this would have happened.

Hello John McE and glad I've helped answer your questions. I'll try and add a little more detail.

You mention having a smart meter. If this was installed by us and there are no problems with the signal, we'll be taking regular readings remotely. This means our bills will be accurate. You can check this on your bills. There'll either be an 'A' or 'S' after the reading. Estimated readings have an 'E'.

If the bills are estimated, please let us have up to date readings and we'll be happy to rebill to these and review your payments.

It will have helped clearing the balance in December. It looks like the subsequent increase in the monthly payments wasn't enough as it still wasn't covering the energy being used. This will have led to the recent increase to £173 a month.

When assessing usage, we rely on information from the meter at the property in question. I know it sounds odd to base assessments on previous occupiers but it's often the only information we have.

Did you let us have details of what you thought your usage might be in kWh when first setting up the account? Bit late now, I know, but we could've used your figures at that time when quoting.

As I posted earlier, now you've been there a year and once the balance has been cleared, payments will even out and start to reflect your ongoing usage. This will take away the fluctuations you've had.

Hope this adds a little more detail to my earlier post John McE. You know where I am if you need any more information. Happy to help.

My switch to eon at new huose is going through at the moment, old supplier says gas will switch next thursday. Are you suggesting as soon as I am with Eon at new house (on both fuels) I may be able to port my tariff then?

You're welcome clairet707. Happy to help.

You'll need to give up responsibility for the old property before we can look at porting the tariff. Tariff porting needs to be done through the online route looked after by our Home Moves team I mentioned in other threads. Please talk to this team (contact details are on our website) as soon as you reach this point.

    Thanks clairet707.
