I am thinking of moving from OVO to EON.

Can you confirm my SMETS1 smart meter will work?

According to this https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/switching-suppliers-with-a-smart-meter.html it should!

'Which energy providers are compatible with OVO smart products?
If you’re currently an OVO customer, we use Secure smart meters. There are a few other energy companies using the same type of Secure smart meters. At the time of writing this they are Co-operative Energy Ltd, E (Gas & Electricity), Economy Energy, Ecotricity, Electricity Plus Supply Ltd t/a The Utility Warehouse, EON Energy, Eversmart Energy Ltd, First Utility Ltd, Robin Hood Energy Limited, Spark Energy Supply Limited, Toto Energy Limited and Utilita Energy Limited.

So if you choose to switch to one of those providers, their network should be able to talk to your OVO smart meter.

Hello Terry98 and thanks for your interest in joining us.

I can't give a guarantee that your smart meters will continue to work as smart following a switch to us. Secure Liberty meters are among the makes we've used in the past and I suspect there's a good chance they'll continue as smart once you transfer to us. There could be circumstances that might stop this and we wouldn't be aware of these until we have control of the meter following the switch.

Later this year, we're starting to update SMETS1 meters so they can be managed in the same way as SMETS2. At this point, any smart features that might've been lost will be restored. This is done remotely and we won't need to visit your home. It also covers smart meters we didn't install and now supply.

    Sorry I can't give you a definite guarantee Terry98.

Thank you for your reply Malc. Although your reply was not a definite guarantee that my Smart Meters would work I have now joined E.ON in hope that they will.

I am going to miss the monthly billing and the amount of information the OVO provide about my usage. I am sure you would agree the roll out programme for Smart Meters has been worse than Brexit but that is for another day.

You're welcome Terry98 and thanks for joining us.

If you sign up to our website, you can still have monthly bills using the online Real Time Billing tool. Pop in meter readings and you'll have the option of seeing the balance that would result or actually creating a bill.

Also online, the E.ON See pages let you see your monthly usage for both electricity and gas. For the most accurate results, it's best to enter readings in the first week of every month and request a bill. The E.ON See will take around two weeks to pull the information from your bills to the online graphs.

Welcome to E.ON Terry98 and hope this is of interest.

Thanks Malc. A very helpful reply.

I have signed up on the website and for the app but I think my account will not become fully operational for a couple of weeks.
As I was only offered quarterly billing I thought the monthly option was not available so I soon as I am asked to enter my readings in a couple of weeks I will go for monthly bills which will help me a lot.
As I am on smart meters OVO will obviously have their final figures before I do so my figures will not marry up with theirs.I suppose you have that covered.

Hello Terry98 and glad my reply was helpful.

You're right, your online account won't be fully operational until the switch is complete.

You'll stay on quarterly billing. The Real Time Billing I mentioned is an online option available to you. It's something you need to do yourself as and when you need it. As above, just pop in meter readings and choose to see the balance or request a bill. Sorry if I wasn't clear before.

We'll ask you for readings a few days before we start supplying and send these to Ovo. They'll use the same readings to close their account and issue a final bill. These readings go through a third party who check they're in line with past readings held for the property. Sometimes they make a change and both suppliers need to use the revised readings to open and close their respective accounts. This stops the same energy from being charged twice.

Hope this is useful Terry98. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help. Have a good weekend.

Hi - we have been with Eon for a long time and would not want to change!

Malc says you can see your monthly gas and electricity usage - this is true, but the figure is combined, so not really a lot of use for you to make decisions on. The monthly charts for each fuel are shown in £££, again not a lot of use as if you change your tariff it makes comparisons of USAGE invalid. We have made the point many times to Eon that it should show KWh for each fuel for each month, but so far, no joy!

Secondly the web site seems to be a problem, both for FIT and for up-dating information provided to it. Is it having a re-vamp or why is it so slow to show figures provided (e.g. monthly readings)?
Other than that we have always been happy with the way Eon has responded to questions and queries, let's hope that will continue.

I switched my mum to E-on in June or July last year.
Mum wanted to go with a company that she had heard of, so E-on ticked that box, and the quote, based on actual usage over the previous year, showed that she would actually be paying less per month than she had been paying her previous supplier (which she still finds hard to believe)..

The switch was totally hassle free.

The only thing that caused slight concern came in, I think, early winter, when I decided to log on to her account to check things looked ok, and there was a big glaring warning, suggesting she pay a huge amount of money straight away (£300-ish I think from memory) in order to stay on track.
    .
However, having checked that her actual usage was still comparable with the same months in previous years, and that her DD payments were still easily going to cover the remaining 6 months of her contract, I decided to ignore it, and said nothing to Mum.
Next time I checked, the suggested payment had dropped by 66%, then disappeared totally the time after that..
If my mum had known about this, she would have been very stressed!

The only other niggle, though one that could have happened with many other companies, is that Mum got pressured into finally agreeing to having a smart meter installed.
This is almost certain to cause problems in the future, as I don't think it is one of the latest 'transferable' meters.
Mum could read the old meters, but can't see well enough to read the smart meter, even if she knew how to bring the necessary figures up on it, and I live too far away to do that for her!
This is likely to complicate things when its time to switch again.

    Pressure for Smart Meters
I had to contact Eon when the site was down and I couldn't enter a reading and they also put me under pressure to have a smart meter. I would not like to say I remember exactly the words used, but the 'threat' was that if I didn't have one now - for free - I would probably have to pay for one in the future.
I know the companies are under pressure to achieve targets on this, but there is no legal requirement to have a meter, the companies are required to OFFER one. I think I will say in future: I hear your offer, but I choose to decline, so please take this no further.'

The switch went smoothly (not really a switch as it was the same company, just a different tariff

    BUT read on . . .
A few weeks previous I managed to switch my utilities but have still not heard anything from them:( I was one of the ones who was on the highest rate as never managed to switch down, tut, tut, I know :o
Speaking of energy, went through Cheap energy club, filled in details, and came up with what I would pay monthly, going to a new deal (still with same energy supplier) - that was early Feb, now received 2 emails (Gas + Elec switched) and monthly D/D will be . . . . - 57% MORE !!! with me being charged the much lower rate :( Peeved off to say the least :( now outwith my 14 day cancellation period :( as they took 7-8 weeks to tell me that.

They keep telling you, move, switch, your on the highest rate, etc, etc, etc.

I have tried to check the unit price I signed up for on the cheap energy club but cannot find it anywhere :( I now doubled checked previous/new bill and the only reduction is the standing charge daily - not the price per unit - that is still the same  :(

So reduction daily + now paying by d/d = 57% MORE monthly !!! If anyone can work that one out, please explain to me :)

That's 57% more than the quote from the MSE Energy Club (which gave an estimate when looking for new/cheap deal.
