It does appear that in the UK, if you actually do not like your job a doctor will diagnose you with stress and anxiety for a few months and then when the sick pay runs out you go for the benefits. Life is anxious and stressful and people should get used to it.
Unbelievable!
Dealing with anxiety and it debilitating effects is quite life destroying. I should know as I suffer from it.
Mental health is serious health condition.
Your statement reads as though you would also tell a seriously depressed person to put on a smile.0 -

It's a matter of degree though. I do not believe it is as widespread as the figures would indicate. Not being able to sleep due to worrying about work issues, is not a medical condition in my opinion.
I have spent a little time in some of the poorer parts of India and the codition is virtually non existant despite the lifestyles being much more challenging.0 -

Thankfully we have qualified professionals to make those decisions.
Speaking from my own experience started with worrying about work issues. I ignored the signs and carried on regardless. Needless to say in hindsight I wished I had of gone to my GP during its early stages. So in reference to your statement regards getting 'on the sick' does not apply to everyone.
I have also travelled Asia and I can agree that they live poorly, yet are happy and content, land of smiles being an example.0 -
If the UK has increasing claims for children, perhaps we should ask ourselves why we have made it so financially beneficial for parents to want to put a label on their child?
A significant factor of the rise in child claims is because of improving medical treatment, children with certain conditions do not die shortly after birth, but may have a near-normal lifespan, though with very significant disabilities through it.
Added to the fact that a large fraction of the long-stay hospitals for the unable have been shut.0 -

Or because each child disability claim can be worth thousands of pounds each years, what with DLA, CTC, CA.......:cool:0 -

What would you prefer? That they spent their lives in institutions or hospitals? Dont you think this would cost the tax payer more?SPC #1813

Which will also be true in most other EU countries.
There's really no point in trotting out reasons like this (and the fact of an ageing population) for the UK's disability/sickness situation when exactly the same situations exist in other EU countries without necessitating the increase in benefits that the UK exhibits.0 -

It isnt just about the financial benefits though.
If a child doesnt have a 'label', but they will need long term care and assistance, they can find it extremely difficult to move onto adult social care. In our area without that 'label' you cannot access certain services, such as OT and an advanced level of inclusion support.
Our LA has an 'autism' team, and a 'learning disabilities' team, but it doesnt have a 'something wrong but we dont have a clue what it is team'. If parents dont push for that label, then the child can suffer greatly.
Also, as is said many, many times on this board, it isnt about the diagnosis, its about the need.SPC #1813
