And its only fair when buyers abuse loopholes.

In this instance buyer has not abused loophole- auction clearly stated paypal accepted and default checkout would only show paypal. Seller's own terms cannot take away buyers right to have buyer protection and accept the payment clearly shown at the top of the auction.

We all gamble on this every time we list a collection only piece

Because there are such obvious loopholes that sellers would abuse.

Littlemax you may well have issues so be prepared as your listing will have prominently shown the PayPal logo and if they did a checkout it would have defaulted to PayPal only. Wanting to pay by card is a common reason for people to use PayPal

The risks of selling high end items on eBay and hoping for cash are well known, if buyers now decides not to go ahead ( and fingers crossed she can find the cash somewhere) you will lose your FVFs on this.

I'm not too worried about losing my fee as I had a long dialogue with the second highest bidder who had wanted me to end the auction early, and was willing to pay cash on collection. So I am pretty confident I would still have a sale outside of ebay.

I have to collect the item from my Parent's house so she has over a week to get the money together, and I am also going to deliver. So I feel I am being as fair as I can, though I am not prepared to risk a paypal payment.
  • The problem with cash on collection from a buyers point of view is the transfer of risk. One of the reasons you will get more through ebay than say a gumtree ad, or classified, is the fact buyers know they are protected if something goes wrongs.

Cash on collection offers no protection. You can inspect the goods, but it could be an item that can't be properly tested. A computer may well only show a fault after being used for a prolonged period for example. To be honest if I was buying I would be very careful about cash on collection.

That's fine and I fully understand, but I presume you then don't bid on items where the description says 'cash on collection' It is annoying that buyers choose to deliberately ignore this and pay by paypal anyway - because it's their right! If they want to pay by paypal they should choose a seller that supports this.

Cash on collection merely ensures buyers take reasonable responsibility for their purchase and thereafter take responsible care of the item - as opposed wrecking the item and either submitting a claim that it was broken when they received it, or even claim they never received it at all.

When something is paid for in cash and collected, if they don't ask, I insist the buyer thoroughly checks everything over and ensures it all works - in exactly the same way that people successfully conducted business for hundreds of years before Paypal! ;)

Playing devil's advocate I might ask then why sellers ignore the fact that their listing will clearly say 'paypal accepted' and that any checkout will default to paypal only.

Either both parties stick to what the auction states or neither should be expected to.

Soolin although I respect your knowledge of ebay policy, the law still applies and no one can force a seller to take paypal, not even the mighty ebay, even though they force you to put it on the listing. They should just stop doing that for coc items and go back to buyer beware and common sense!

eBay can enforce rules though it is their site, many companies and shops have restrictions in what currency they will take. There is for instance a shop in Victoria that only accepts cash, their shop - their rules (and it is the best jewellery shop I have ever been to!)

So if sellers do not want to run into issues they can't use eBay for collection only items unless they accept the risks of doing so with the PayPal issue. They cannot opt to sell on eBay and then blatantly ignore the rules.

However, I do agree that eBay cannot force a seller to sell, however a seller must accept the risk of getting stuck with FVFs and a neg if they refuse to accept PayPal if offered.

Really, not even one is obvious to you? I obviously have a devious mind then.

Just For a start just consider the fact that eBay would have to disable the computer matrix that automatically added PayPal accepted to all listings. Ok they could link that to the seller showing no postage options.....surely I don't need to explain more?
