Cash on collection

I sold an item and clearly stated (in red aswell) that it was cash on collection it was of course listed as a collection only item.

The buyer paid through paypal, I refunded sent a message explaining why and got a cheeky message back basically saying ebay's policy is all seller must accept paypal. I have checked and this is not the case, now I have emailed saying if your not happy let me know and ill 2nd chance someone. No reply as of yet.

Ive looked at their feedback which isnt pretty ... they have roughly left 21 negative/neutral in the last 12 months. Im gritting my teeth cause I think a negative is heading my way (totally unfair IMO) im waiting on ebay chat just now however I am assuming that I am right in thinking cash on collection only option is supported in the eyes of ebay ?

It is Ebays policy - although their staff do advise people to accept cash.

You may get a neg - but better than being scammed.

I now put a ridiculous postage amount and don't tick the collection option - so they have to pay cash. If they try paying via paypal - they have to pay the postage.

Well you've done everything right so far - unfortunately you've come up against a complete tw*t who obviously knows the 'rules' (eg you must accept PayPal) and is out to muck you about or even scam you.

I think you're going to get a neg unfortunately - you could try getting it removed by phoning Ebay as there have been reports on here of Ebay operatives telling people not to accept PayPal for collected items - they might look sympathetically on your situation.

They will probably also report you as well - these are the pitfall of cash on collection I'm afraid. I've said on here before that I've sold loads of items as cash on collection and never had a problem - but yours is the nightmare scenario I dread!

I wouldn't sell it to the second bidder yet - they might come round with the cash. Wait until this is resolved before relisting & block them.

Your buyer is right, they had a right to pay using PayPal and if you check your listing (and assuming this is not a car) your listing will clearly show PayPal accepted.

eBay are very clear in the rules that cash in collection can be offered as an alternative, but cannot be insisted on. Unfortunately some of the eBay reps are prone to either tell untruths or just be a little too dim to understand their own rules.

No one can force you to sell, but not understanding the rules about PayPal will possibly mean you are stuck with your FVfs to pay, a non performing seller report and a neg.

eBay requires all sellers listing on eBay.co.uk to offer payments through PayPal (with some limited exceptions). In most cases, other payment options may be offered as well.

PayPal is not only convenient to use, but it also offers buyers and sellers protection assistance against fraud, chargebacks and theft of financial data.

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/accepted-payments-policy.html

The bit that gets misinterpreted is on the same page further down

There's only one exception: Sellers who offer payment on collection may include the following statement in their listings: 'Contact me for payment methods for paying on collection.'

However, that does not exclude the requirement for PayPal to be offered and accepted if buyer chooses

Auction has ended so postage cannot be added on now. Buyer no longer has to agree to anything, they either pay cash and collect or walk away from the deal scot free leaving seller with fees to pay.

We know the risks when we list collection only items , it is just a shame that eBay cs give such terrible advice on the phone to some people.

If something can be posted then list with a postage cost and mention in the listing that collection is possible , and then you can ask for cash or insist it is posted. Or if something cannot be posted at all, even by courier decide if it is worth the risk of listing in eBay,or better to list elsewhere.

Not all people wanting to use PayPal are scammers, the trick is to use common sense and work out your own level of risk

So true - i always pay with paypal when collecting - when the buyer does not say i can't. Gives extra protection and allows me to pay via card.

I would never use paypal if it says COD though.

This is what I have done Ive now added the postage option to the invoice for tracked delivery but as its heavy its a tad pricey. There is no longer a cash on collection option dont want that cheeky person coming to my door. eBay state Ive not breached any of their terms and no action will be taken against me.

It would seem increasing the postage after sale is not allowed however if there is no postage option you can then add one after sale and scrap the cash on collection option. Shes refusing to pay and I have the unpaid item assistant on so I should get my fees back as it will open in 4 days, they wont pay and it will close in 4 days (hopefully)

No you can't, you might technically be able to do so, but you cannot charge a delivery fee if none was previously stated.

If buyer does not pay now and you manage to open an NPB, he can easily appeal it showing proof of original payment made.

Do not rely on what ebay tell you on the phone if it goes against their rules, they are very quick to forget they promised to protect you , when something goes wrong. Obviously there is always the chance of them acting in goodwill- but with ebay this should never be relied on.

I had this situation and got my FVFs back so the situation may not be as dire as Soolin is saying.

I would message the second highest bidder and see if they are still interested.

Ebay is a pain for collection items, as well as for most other things these days, so next time you have a large item I would stick it on gumtree, friday ad, facebook marketplace and preloved.
