I would message the second highest bidder and see if they are still interested.
Ebay is a pain for collection items, as well as for most other things these days, so next time you have a large item I would stick it on gumtree, friday ad, facebook marketplace and preloved.
Did ebay give you them back as a goodwill gesture or did buyer agree to cancel?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I have successfully sold items for very good prices by selling them on eBay, for cash on collection. I don't find it the nightmare other MSE users have found it to be.
With regard to Paypal, you need to be mindful that as the seller, Paypal T&Cs stipulate that you MUST despatch the item via a trackable service, otherwise your protection is completely invalidated. In other words, if someone pays via Paypal and then collects, they can put in a claim for non-receipt of the item, get a refund AND keep the item.
You have to offer Paypal as a form of payment, but (as above) Paypal T&Cs state that it is an inappropriate form of payment for pick-up, so only accept Paypal if the item is being despatch via a shipping service - otherwise insist on cash if the item is to be picked up.
Just to be sure, in my item listings offering collection, I outline the inappropriateness of Paypal T&Cs for collection items and set out that Paypal is accepted only if the buyer pays for a shipping service - or, if pick-up is desired, cash is the only form of payment appropriate for collection.
I am certainly not having the 'Paypal & pick-up nightmares' that other MSE contributors write of.

I think I would have replied to the buyer saying that they are right, and as per Ebay rules, you MUST offer Paypal.
I'd then go on and say that as per Paypal rules, you also have to have a tracking number to prove delivery, so if they still want to pay by Paypal, that's fine, but you'll need to send it tracked, so will need to add the cost of courier on. Otherwise, as per the auction, they're still welcome to pay cash on collection.
I know several people who have done this and got their fees back, as it was clearly someone trying to scam them.
The buyer's love of leaving negs and neutrals indicates a scammer.
If they do leave a neg, just respond to it saying "buyer addicted to leaving negs. see FB left for others!"Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Got my FVF back did get a neg in the end but I knew that would happen it was ebay that refunded the fees btw !0

Happily, given the situation, you have emerged relatively unscathed. You have not lost both the item and the money, which is what your buyer was almost certainly aiming for.
If a buyer is especially coming to collect an item from a seller and has the necessary funds in a paypal account, there's no good reason why they can't convert it into cash... unless they're hatching a scam.

To Be fair, looking at it from the other side as a buyer.
I recently bought a set of winter tyres and wheels for my car. I won the auction at the starting price. Obviously a collection only item! I messaged the seller asking if they would accept paypal so I could use a cashback CC as it was best part of £1k, I think they were an inexperienced seller (first item sold!), so they said yes. I paid and collected and am delighted with my purchase.

I have sold two bulky items in the last month and not had any problems at all with cash on collection.
But tonight auction ended and the buyer paid by paypal within seconds. I pointed out that I had stated cash on collection only and she said she had seen this but thought it was just my preferred option as the paypal option was also there and she has paid by credit card. I have pointed out why I say cash on collection and have refunded her payment and she seems OK to continue but is miffed because she wanted to pay by credit card and not cash. I have tried to keep it really friendly and said I hope she understands why it needs to be cash on collection.
I think it will be OK, but I'm not willing to risk £120! I know she can understand my position she is just miffed cos she wanted to bung it on her credit card. She has said she really doesn't understand what I mean as I can see from her feedback that she is a genuine buyer and will not put in a fake claim that she has not received the item. I really want to reply but a con person would say they were genuine too ... but have restricted myself to thank you for being so understanding. I really hate ebay ... why oh why do I still use it?0 -
We are all told to use common sense with COC listings, why can't Ebay use common sense and drop the compulsory PayPal on these listings?0

Because there are such obvious loopholes that sellers would abuse.
Littlemax you may well have issues so be prepared as your listing will have prominently shown the PayPal logo and if they did a checkout it would have defaulted to PayPal only. Wanting to pay by card is a common reason for people to use PayPal
The risks of selling high end items on eBay and hoping for cash are well known, if buyers now decides not to go ahead ( and fingers crossed she can find the cash somewhere) you will lose your FVFs on this.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
