Really? I've just paid my license:eek: I hate paying it (doesn't everyone? LOL) as I don't even watch telly! only once in a blue moon! I prefer the radio.
I too listen to the radio more than I watch TV programmes (not live by the way;)) If you can do without watching your TV live and when your programmes become available 30 minutes or so later on iplayer. Dump your TV license! You can get a refund by the way :D

I agree with you CQ123, and your right about it not being straight forward , even if you have a recording device you must have a tv licence, I remember an oap had to buy a colour tv licence, even though he had a black and white tv, because he had a video player that could receive the colour signal  another money making swindle we have to pay.
Certainly isn't straightforward. They have so many ways of making people think they are license dodging scum :mad:
Regarding your friend. If he didn't have access to a live signal and only used his VHS player to watch videos he should have told TV licensing to bog off

Think it also needs to be a portable device, so unplugging the laptop and running it off the battery when watching live TV and plugging it in when watching iplayer should be ok.

Whether the second part is true or not, the first part should stop them finding you. I suspect a halls of residence address would make them think twice about a visit, though it won't stop mailings to "the occupier of room xx, Halls" in the hope that you will pay.

I beleive the first part is true but the only way the authorities have of knowing if you have a receiving device is from the retailer which is why you are required to fill in a form when you buy and that address is passed to the licence authority, so unless your dd/ds buy a tv or dvd player and declare their address the tv people are just guessing or scare mongering:)

  • I was going to buy 20 the other day as I knew the discount didn't come off, but there are big signs on the fridge saying only 1 offer per transaction.
Hmm I didn't notice any signs but will check again later. Thats a bit mean of Sada :(

When I was little my mum used to call the living room the "Saloon"

My great-grandparents did own a pub.

Off to As later as I want to get stocked up on yogs and coke before half-term starts and we have a houseful of starving students. Hanging on to see if anyone confirms they are working today as I already overspent on the grocery budget.

whenever I hear the word "saloon" it reminds me of a speghetti western:rotfl: My Dad used to watch them all the time when I was a kid. He even took me to a saloon in Sardinia that featured in spaghetti western films:D

Anyone else call the toilet the 'little room'? x

    morning all

had to laugh at last night chosen topic. We had a winterdykes when we were wee but I tend to call it a clothes horse now. We also had a lobby (hall) and a stairheid windae on the tap landin. Racking my brains to remember what we called the close which ran inbetween the 2 houses tho.

Hope everyone is well and taking good care of themselves

    x:o

when we lived in a house with a close, it was called a ginnell. No idea if that's how it's spelt :D

My nan also had a 'landing light' which always used to make me think of runways and aeroplanes when I was little :rotfl::rotfl:

    From TV licensing website:

So the "address where you live" is your parent's address as proved by a) having a room there, b) being there a lot c) being on the electoral register d) address for bank statements etc e) registered home address with the uni.
That would be your Uni digs.
Regards the battery thing, I'd guess they'd say that you would need to power it up to recharge your batteries. Interesting though :)
