    a tad confusing.
It's saying that the genuine csrss.exe won't appear in the MSCONFIG Startup tab or in the Start - All Programs - Startup folder. If csrss.exe does appear in these places then it's a virus. To prevent it starting, untick the box in MSCONFIG or delete it from the Startup folder (right-click and click Open and Open All Users - it might be in both these Startup folders).

An easy way to see what's what is to download Hijackthis from somewhere the likes of merijn.... You'll have to scroll down the page a bit.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/

    Run it...

Then copy and paste the log into this link for analysis. ;)

    Hope that helps.

  • It's not uncommon to have 6 or more running in XP.

Hi - the Microsoft anti-spyware programme has a running processes tool and a start up programme one, which gives basic info about each process and allows you to stop any you don want.
  • I find winpatrol (www.winpatrol.com) is a good little program to run. I have that and Spybot-SD running in my task box. Between them, they tell you what is running and what will run at startup.

More importantly they track changes to lots of key areas such as startup programs, Activex controls, Internet start page and Scheduled tasks and ask if you want these changes to happen
