Hi.
I have windows XP installed on my computer and am frustrated with the number of running processes on it which slow my computer down. Is there a programme out there that can analyse these and shut them down or delete them if I don't need them?
I have used MSCONFIG but that does not give me any good details.
Any ideas?

Thanks for this. I have tried Google before and a few websites like the one you suggested. However (perhaps I am lazy!) I would like a programme that could do this for me. I am surprised Norton System Works our Ad-aware Professional do not have a programme that does this. Oh well. I'll try what you suggested, but if anyone knows of a programme that actually does this I would interested.Moneysaving since 2004!0 -
There is a program called EndItAll that can do this kind of thing. There are several versions of it.

i currently hace 32 processes running in my task manager. After checkin alot of the Image names through the link TOG supplied, it appears i have alot of worms, spyware, viruses etc. I regularly check my Pc using Norton, MS anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot search along with my firewall on 100% of the time, after these have run they claim my PC is clean.
What should i do with the processes that appear to be unwanted (virus, bugs etc) how do i get rid of them? Do i have viruses then?0 -
Looks like it, have you tried running a free scan from housecall? http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
What processors are running that shouldnt be? Make sure you turn system restore OFF before trying to remove anything dodgy...
Adaware should scan running processors so not sure why its not picking them up. Is all youe AV/Adaware progs up2date?0 -
SpyBot has a "StartUps" section somewhere within it. That'll help with removing any apllications that run on start up.
You can also edit the Services that start. Here's an article for more information http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm, but just be careful.
With regards to other unwanted processes I'd suggest updating all of your AV, anti-spyware software etc... then doing a full scan."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Some of the processes running are:csrss.exe, smss.exe, services.exe
i have just updated all AV and spyware progs and ran them...showing a clean bill of health0 -
csrss.exe, smss.exe, services.exe - Those are fine. Part of Windows O/S
Any others?0 -
I checked those processes in the link TOG supplied and it says
Filename: csrss.exe
Name: BagleAV
Description: Added by the NETSKY.AB WORM! Note - this is not the legitimate csrss.exe process which should NOT appear in Msconfig/Startup!
Recommendation: Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and "resource hogs"
a tad confusing.
erm, some others are spoolsv.exe, soundman.exe and savscan.exe0 -
oh, didnt know that about csrss.exe. I know I have it running but it's been there since I installed XP/SP2.
spoolsv.exe - Printer Service
soundman.exe - most likely realtek sound card software
savscan.exe - Norton0
