So many great helpful posts today; thank you all.
Well I did it! My first AFD since I don't know when. I am in my pjs now so I think it's pretty safe to declare 1/2.
    Good Night.
    Well done :A

    Debt-free and Proud!
20/21 tonight :D. Wow, can't believe I'm going to do this and actually feeling rather proud of myself.

As for November, I'm aware I'm not going to manage so many AF days as it's my mother's birthday and my son's birthday, not to mention I've found 21 days a real challenge. In light of that but also taking into consideration that it is also good to challenge oneself; I shall set my November target to 18.
    2018 totals:
    Savings £11,200
    Mortgage Overpayments £5,500

    Congrats! How do.you feel.today?

Hi mrsdee; actually I slept quite badly and weirdly felt 'hangoverish' this morning. I can only think I am starting to detox after drinking heavily everyday for a long time - does that happen so quickly? Probably not but I would like to think that my body can adjust to not having so much alcohol.
  • Hi All

Thanks for the welcome and the encouragement so far :j It was really helpful to read tips on alternatives to alcohol and I am happy to report that last night was my first night in a long time that I was completely alcohol free :T Tonight was my 2nd :D

I had a perfectly enjoyable diet coke last night and am sipping apple juice from a wine glass tonight and I'm feeling good :) I wasn't sure about pouring it in a wine glass at first, as I guess I'm wanting to move away from the association to alcohol, but in the end I decided that it's early days for me and it would probably help me more doing it this way in the short term :)

Last night, I put the £5 I would have spent on a bottle of wine in a jar and intend to do this each time I would have bought a bottle (about 3 times a week if I am honest :o:eek:) I will then treat myself to an item of clothing or something nice for my home (which I always say I can't afford, but know I can if I stop consuming so much expensive wine :) ).

It's funny how a 'drinking habit' can creep upon you without you being fully aware of it. When I look back, I must have started drinking wine when I became a single parent and wasn't able to go out and socialise the same way. I got to know another mum on my street in a similar position and she introduced me to white wine.....25 years later, I am still very familiar with white wine ;)

I think back then, it was a treat at the weekend and I'm not sure when it escalated and became 'normal' to drink every night and that one bottle at the weekend turned into three  It's been a long time and after a lightbulb moment regarding the damage to my health and the realisation of the actual cost per month (£60) it feels the right time to address what I consider to be my excessive drinking.

I don't think I want to stop completely, but my aim is to only buy one bottle a week. I'm not sure how that will equate to alcohol free days so I will give that a thought and see if I can join in the AF challenges to keep me on track.

Sorry for the bit of ramble....I was thinking out loud really, but it feels a safe place here to do that :)

Well done to all who are reaching their targets :T:eek:
  • Not AF today. I feel really annoyed with myself as I poured that glass of wine at 10.00pm having got through getting in from work, preparing dinner, eating dinner and sitting down in front of the telly on two cups of tea, and a fizzy water. I then received a phone call from my trainwreck of a brother (not his fault he's bi-polar) put the receiver down and immediately poured a glass of wine - and then another. I really want to do better tomorrow.

Shaggy (is that ms, mrs or mr?) I would like to set a target of 10 for November please.

This is a brilliant idea I think I will do the same - thank you.

Hi there, it's really common to have problems sleeping when you stop drinking.

For me drinking blocked out a lot so when I didn't drink (and I did a lot of cutting down before I stopped) I would often have a disturbed nights sleep as my brain wouldn't switch off (or pass out!!)

I don't come here very often now but have this thread to thank for my sobriety. If anyone wants to pm me feel free.

A great book which has been recomended many many times on here is No big deal by John Coates.

When I first stopped drinking I would drink Shloer instead. It could be chilled in the fridge like wine, came in a bottle like wine, opened like wine, glugged like wine and I would drink it out of a wine glass. It helped!!!

Gosh, this thread is really buzzing! :Tto you all.

Bells clanged quite loudly for me tonight, no idea what brought that on. I even got as far as putting a bottle in the fridge. But there it stayed.:D

    13 AFDs please Shaggy

And I'm determined to have at least one more AF day this week so the witchy pumpkin can be mine too!
