On the other hand, if he were up to no good, why wouldn't he just take them from your free stash at home? Unless you count them you'd be none the wiser and he'd stand less chance of getting caught.

Maybe he decided on whatever he wanted to do whilst out? I don't know. Maybe I'm just being ridiculously paranoid but I can't shake the bad feeling He's never done anything to me before but I've been hurt in the past

Perhaps he thought 'we're running low, it's icy/snowy with the possibility of more forecast and it's a pain to get to the free ones in good weather, so I'll pick myself up an extra box- just in case we find ourselves snowbound and looking for something to do';)

The conclusion I'd immediately jump to is that he's not a clue where you normally get them and thought he was being helpful.
