Sounds like my neck of the woods! I can confirm there are no Co op banks here!

What about a credit union? We have a couple near us in West Cumbria. There may be some near you. They may be able to help.

  • This happened to me too.
My credit rating was appalling but Lloyds TSB accepted me with their basic account and so did Nationwide. Good luck.

  • sorry to repeat, but why not try calling one of them to ask how to appeal the decline. was always done by post where i worked. worth a shot, a phone call might be cheaper than bus/train/taxi to a branch.

Which ones have you spoken to in person and what have they told you is the reason you've been declined. These are basic bank accounts, your past credit history should not come in to it.

There is a Lloyds in Workington, they may be worth a shot as bubblebath suggested. The only other thing I can think of is a managed account such as think banking. I wouldn't normally recommend them but they may be your last resort. You don't even need to be on the electoral roll but I don't know if this applies in your case. I was thinking along the same lines as a previous poster in that a pre-paid debit card may work but I think some have maximum load limits, but I may be wrong.

    Any one any ideas?

Edit: There is a Clydesdale bank in Workington and I think Carlisle. They do a basic account with debit card.
