We just sent the form off today for the first time and applied for grant for some driving lessons for my wife. My 5 year old son currently has speech delay and development needs and he is getting middle rate DLA.

Does anyone know what sort of criteria family fund works to when deciding who gets the grant and who doesnt?
Also do they take your household income into account?

    Thanks

sorry op i didnt mean to go off topic but i find *some* of the older generation whining about "poor them" seriously annoying.

the family fund are an amazing organisation .[/

The family fund are amazing for helping out families with disabled kids, getting them freezers, washing machines, iPads for te kids etc, things that the families would go without if there were no such fund.

But I do find your post quite offensive, why do you find it seriously annoying when some of the older generation feel they could do with a bit of help? Why do you feel they are whining? Why do you think they have a poor me attitude?

Hundreds of elderly have to go without things people take for granted, what if their freezer broke down, what if they needed a new washing machine, new bed, computer to keep in touch with family to stop loneliness, it's not only disabled children who need help from a fund and I certainly don't thing the elderly have a poor me attitude because they feel they could use a bit of help now and then.

Social services can't always help, the social fund don't allow money for freezers or washing machines and certainly not for computers, is it ok for them to struggle with hand washing or trying to lug clothes to the launderette, is it ok for them to have to buy food each day because they have no fridge or freezer to keep things fresh, is it ok for them to spend the rest of their lives sleeping in a broken bed or back breaking old lumpy mattress.

I guess your answer to all that would be yes it's ok because they are just annoying oldies, yea why should there be some sort of fund to help the old folks out, just let them get on with it eh.
I agree with you and believe the family fund should be abolished. Why are these children in receipt of disability benefits if they are not being used to fund the things the child needs? No wonder Cameron is wielding an axe over everyone. You do not need a computer to exist and disabled benefits would more than cover the cost of one.

My aunt crawls to bed on her knees at night. She's considered too old for any assistance, but they will take her house and savings away.

Actually a lot of those same kids become way more expensive once they reach adulthood, especially if they are still functioning at the toddler stage.
Family fund is brilliant but something to follow on would be a godsend to many. For the poster who queried computers, many children use these as their only activity, ie ASD children are not out playing or being invited to parties like other children, I would give up my sons computer in a heartbeat if he could have played out on a bike with the other local kids instead of being isolated in his room.
