Family Fund

Whilst I fully acknowledge the good work that the Family Fund do, what about the old codgers like my wife and I who need help? Computer? New mattress? Plus a load of gear out of the 'Safe Hands' catalogue?
And if anybody tells me to go to Social Services - we have! We have a care manager that has been appointed for us, but all that we are told is that there is no money available - here is the catalogue!
do you think you need more help than disabled children ?
my parents worked all their lives paying into pension schemes but another relative spent every penny she earnt and is better off than my parents now as almost everything is paid for her.

No not more help, maybe the same.
As for your other comments, they have no relevance to the topic being discussed.
There are many old people that could do with a little help. Maybe a computer so that they could communicate more effectively. A holiday, maybe a new bed. The older disabled person is probably at a lower level of poverty than a family with young disabled children. As I have said I praise the work of the Family Fund, it is just a shame that there isn't the same for the older disabled person who has similar needs. They say that the older you get the more they revert to being children again.0 -

You cant be doing that badly - you gave your daughter money for a deposit for a rental house and the first months rent.
Didnt you also get a massive payout after an industrial injury, or is that another of your alter ego's?SPC #1813

sorry op i didnt mean to go off topic but i find *some* of the older generation whining about "poor them" seriously annoying.

The family fund are amazing for helping out families with disabled kids, getting them freezers, washing machines, iPads for te kids etc, things that the families would go without if there were no such fund.
But I do find your post quite offensive, why do you find it seriously annoying when some of the older generation feel they could do with a bit of help? Why do you feel they are whining? Why do you think they have a poor me attitude?
Hundreds of elderly have to go without things people take for granted, what if their freezer broke down, what if they needed a new washing machine, new bed, computer to keep in touch with family to stop loneliness, it's not only disabled children who need help from a fund and I certainly don't thing the elderly have a poor me attitude because they feel they could use a bit of help now and then.
Social services can't always help, the social fund don't allow money for freezers or washing machines and certainly not for computers, is it ok for them to struggle with hand washing or trying to lug clothes to the launderette, is it ok for them to have to buy food each day because they have no fridge or freezer to keep things fresh, is it ok for them to spend the rest of their lives sleeping in a broken bed or back breaking old lumpy mattress.
I guess your answer to all that would be yes it's ok because they are just annoying oldies, yea why should there be some sort of fund to help the old folks out, just let them get on with it eh.0 -
I'm afraid adults with disabilities are simply not as appealing as children. It is sad but once an adult there is little extra help for the nicer things in life. However a few extra's do start creeping in once at pensionable age.
Those who do qualify for help with family fund please enjoy it because it will not be there in later life. There is one good thing though it does help ones budgeting skills as its amazing what you can stretch finance to when yoou need.0 -

Difficult to keep up with him, isn't it? This AE seems not to need Family Fund help:If I was you I would grab anything that is offered that might lead to a job. However in my case I don't want a job having retired on a full ill health pension 4 years ago when I was 60.
But if it meant keeping my benefit income, I would still go even if it is to meet new people and get out of the house.
Unless of course his job was poorly paid.0 -

Thanks
We aren't - we saved hard whilst I was working. If you can't help your kids out what else is there?
Payout? I wish!
Alter Ego? Now you have me totally confused? I may be getting old but I do know who I am and have always been.0 -

Yes I agree they are.
The older person like ourselves, have been hit harder than any other sector of society. No return on savings, cost of living through the roof and we have to live on a fixed income.
Seems that you have no compassion for your elders.
Typical of today's society.0 -

Thank you so much from one 'oldie' that provided the finance to fund the education and health service for those in the generation behind us. I, we, never complained about what we paid in over 40 years + of work - I, we, saw it as a requirement to help fund the wellbeing of our children.0
