    I've costed out my bread and it works out at approximately 40p a loaf.

    sorry did not mean to post and run but oh granny has ended up in hospital again and I havent had a chance to get back on. Re the bread thing we have cut down to one small loaf a week as trying to lose weight so that is helping the pocket. We did try making bread in the past and it was edible but the smell of bread baking makes me gag!! I cant even go near the bakery section in a supermarket so we gave up on that one :)

    We regularly bulk out meals with veg, beans etc - havent tried the oats one though -does it not go gloopy or lumpy?

  • Re softer, lighter home-made bread.
    I have a Panasonic breadmaker, and I have found two ways of getting a lighter loaf. First of all, using the standard white loaf setting, replace about 4 ounces of the strong flour (approx 100 grams) with ordinary plain flour, then proceed as normal. A second idea is to use the sandwich loaf setting which takes an hour longer - this bread turns out softer than the ordinary 4-hour loaf.
    I too use 100g of plain flour to make my bread lighter and I also warm the flour before baking. And I get great loaves of bread.

    I've only done the oats once but I thought it was a bit gloopy so haven't done it again. Like you I use veg, beans etc.

    3 cups bread flour (or 2.5 cups bread flour and 1/2 cup wholemeal)
    1/4 tsp yeast (I used 1 tsp)
    1 tsp salt
    1.5 cups warm water.

    Look at the link on the first page of the thread and look at the Steamykitchen one. Easy if you follow the steps in it.
