I have posted a few times on here but more often than not spent the time lurking and reading.
Both my partner have decent enough jobs that pay well over the minimum wage and apart fom an overdraft each we have no debt. We dont drink or smoke but do each run a car and at the end of each month we are back into the overdraught.

We nipped to Mr s earlier to do a top up shop and cant believe that a loaf of decent bread is now £1.50 !! and the mince bought for the spag bol was £3.20 - I am really shocked at how much food price have increased recently and just wondered how others are managing.

We dont have a choice, it horrifies me, we are both state pensioners, obviously on fixed income.

The one thing I wont stint on is bread, I love nice bread.

I bought mince yesterday, cooked it all, we half of it with crusty dumplings, mash and veg. The other half has gone in the freezer to make a pie or shepherds pie next week. I bought 3 chicken breasts, cut through the middle of them, cooked them in a sauce, ate half for lunch and yes, you guessed it, the other half in the freezer.
I'm gonna have a cheap week sometime soon. lol.

Could you make your mince go twice as far for your spagboll.
I saw Morrisons loaves yesterday for 75p.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

  • Hi,

make your mince go further by mixing it half and half with soya mince, available in all supermarkets and health shops.

Add a cup of hot water to a cup of soya in a bowl, and allow to rehydrate, then add to mince, you won't notice the difference.

I add a spoon of Marmite love0031.gif to the water first, but use Oxo/Bovril if you want.

Also, to make mince go further you can add a handful of porridge oats.
  • I'm bulking stuff out more and more, so a £3 portion of lean mince from Iceland can go further. I bulk it with Mr S basic frozan veg, a HUGE onion, mushrooms, tin of sweetcorn, baked beans (!) the out of that I can do a small cottage pie for me and him, a spag Bol, then chuck some chilli powder in what's left and voila! A chilli!!!

But, yes agree on the bread, I usually shop at sainsbags, but they don't seem to have as much reduced bread as tescos. I tried their basics bread, but OH (who eats more of it than me) doesn't like it.

For bread buns, I love my local baker/butcher, you get 12 for £1.10, and they're lovely. Not much good for toast though.....

I know not everyone has time to shop around but you can check offers on different supermarkets on line and vary where you shop. Eat veg etc in season it's cheaper... I send DH to Lidl if they have good deals on whilst I am at work. Their extra lean mince is £1.79 a pack and their bread at 79p is pretty good not that I eat much bread. The check we were cheapest promo at Tesco and Asda is good too as if you picked the wrong place this week you still get some cash back.

  • Have you tried making your own bread? I make mine. 1.5 kgs of strong white flour is 66p in Sainsburys, yeast, salt and sugar come in at a few pence. I make four loaves in one go so the oven is full, and I have worked it out that one loaf has cost me about 40p or there abouts. Once the bread is cool, slice it, wrap it, freeze it. So much nicer than shop bought bread.

Pick up a breadmaker at a car boot sale - Panasonic for choice. Fabulous bread, at about a third of the price.
    Better is good enough.

I've made bread so many times over many, many years, and it's never been a success. I will eat it, nobody else will except the hens (kids are now all in their 20s and decidedly sniffy about my cooking anyway).

I have tried strong white flour and wholemeal bread flour, and a 50/50 mix. I have tried fresh yeast, fresh yeast which has been in my freezer, and 'easy' dried yeast. I have tried water from the tap, water from the kettle and water in which potatoes have been boiled.

Every time I end up with a very dense, chewy loaf, and the offspring like very light, sliced bread, the Hovis Best of Both is their favourite. I usually buy Aldi or Lidl wholemeal loaves, or Aldi multigrain if it's reduced, and they'll all get on with that. The Hovis goes into the freezer in great quantities if I time the Tesco visit so that it's been stickered down to 20p or less.

I guess I do something very wrong in the kneading and proving area. I get cramp in my wrists when kneading and probably give up too soon. I don't have a breadmaker, nor room for one, neither do I have a food processor or machine with a dough hook.

Tips very, very welcome from people who successfully make their own bread!
  • Ah, I have a Kenwood to do my kneading, I don't use any special water, and only ever use dried yeast. I set it to rise for about an hour, them knock it back before the second prove and final bake. OH won't entertain shop bread any more.......

The price of food is astronomical.. I think fruit & veg has gone really expensive... I try and grow as much as I can and it tastes better.
