Well, if it is so easy to get the scribbles off the walls why don't the vendors do it if the property is on the market? It does make you wonder what else they haven't bothered to do which can't be seen.

I do find brightly painted children's rooms off putting, especially painted woodchip which is a pain to get off without damaging the plaster. And I really don't understand why some vendors give the largest bedroom to one of their children.

Many buyers can look past bright colours, bad room arrangements, and scribbles on the walls, but not all can, and in the current market why make it harder to sell?
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

When we looked round our first house the children's bedroom had been newly painted, possibly to cover up scribbes etc. It was only when we actually moved in that we realised they had only painted the bits that showed so there was a bunkbed sized area and wardrobe sized area in a completely different colour.
OH's first house was like this- she'd painted over the raspberry in her bedroom at his request, but not behind the fitted wardrobes which we later removed

In an ideal world yes, but I very much get the impression a lot of these vendors are completley oblvious to the state of their places.

Yes because thats the way they live, and they think their homes are lovely..........

You sound a wee bit like me, I cant abide a grubby, untidy house, but you have to look past that and see it to the way it would look if you owned it........

Ive moved several times and every dam house has been the same, ie ; stinks of dogs and cats, but the owners cant smell it, fried food, dirty grey net curtains, dirty carpets and paint work, but you have to see through it, and make it your own.......

I f you dont want the job of cleaning it, go and buy a new build all ready to move into..............Luvly super clean magnolia walls and white paint work.........:D

Wonder what the OP makes of STICKERS :rotfl:

God I hate stickers. Our last rental had them all over the place (light switches, windows, cupboards) and I spent ages going round with goo-gone trying to get them off. They look so horrible when they get dirty round the edges.

Surely you just lower you offer to cover the cost of said repairs?

As I was seething about this topic this morning, I brought it up with several people at work this morning. The consensus was in concerence with this thread. i.e. I was being ridiculous.

However, all agreed with the quoted post, i.e. I should make an offer which reflected the cost in time and materials that I would incur in making good the damage the previous owners had caused.

Now I realise this is the crux of the problem, there is a lot of people expecting to get the same price as "next door", despite the standard of presentantion being a lot lower. Hence for the the sake of a few thousand deals are falling through.

What's wrong with giving a kid the biggest bedroom?

As for stickers,I had great fun getting them off the fireplace...

  • I can sort of see where the OP is coming from here. If a vendor can't be bothered to clean up their kid's scribbles, it would make me wonder what other bits of maintenance they couldn't be bothered to do. I'm not one for a shiny new build, and in every house I've owned except my first I've done major renovations, but I would have concerns if I thought the basic maintenance of the place had been neglected.

When I bought my house as a FTB my budget was good enough for an end of terrace or semi, but thanks to this, I bagged a detached property. Well to be frank the house was 15 years old and the two rooms were barbie pink and purple with suitable accessories to match, and I mean glows like neon colour.

Kitchen of about 5 years age was tired, kids must have swung on doors. Bathroom (2 years old) was decorated by an imbecile, all tiles cracked and all furniture made from scratch out of particleboard by the said person.

Every conceivable room had Virgin cable and monster flat screens were wall mounted in every nook and cranny including the store room. Ghastly wallpaper adorned some of the rooms and the master bedroom had fitted furniture, made from scratch by the DIYer out of particleboard (which the vendor stole - thank god, I didn't even pursue legal action)

When the removed the TVs there were obvious marks etc (which I was expecting) and holes on the wall for the numerous mounts etc

I started work on the house, bye stripping it out and more horrors of children's scribble under the wall paper, so decided to fully strip, fill and paint. Then painted in brilliant white and lovely contrasting curtains. All is left to do is bathrooms and kitchen. OK, so yes it is expensive to refurbish, but I paid about £30 to 40K less than a pristine property of that calibre. So even if I were to budget £30K for repairs, I have a house I could afford and the way I want it. That's how you can make use of the situation :)
