Oh, I have felt that pain! Though tbh only smelly or dirty houses offend me as I intend to rip pretty much everything out anyway, just don't want to retch in the process.

Agreed, only the smell of urine and chip fat offend me at house viewings :(

I wouldn't even consider it up to me to tell others how to live in their own homes. I might think, OMG if I buy that house, I'll be painting and recarpeting, but I certainly wouldn't expect any vendor to repair every bit of damage or paint over every scuff mark/scribble. Not their problem, I'm buying the house as seen.

Friends of my BF live like you wouldn't believe. The carpet looks like it's on the floor in a paint factory (spilt god knows what over it all), scribbles and broken things everywhere, stuff on the floor as you walk in where it's fallen off the banister, broken windows, furniture, doors, fences... honestly, I swear the kids are bordering on feral. Nothing lasts 5 mins in their house.

(And, no, they're not 'council' lol! He earns a bloody fortune in the City, she works in a school. The house is a nice Victorian 4 bed. Next door's up for sale at a massively reduced rate - at my guess, because of their neighbours!)

But if I were buying their house - I would not expect them to do a thing. However they've lived their lives is not my concern/problem. If I wanted an immaculate, pristine house, I would buy a new build, or get it painted top to toe and recarpeted before moving in.

The OP maybe hasn't ever bought before... I've always moved in and found dirty markes where pictures have been removed, dents in carpets where furniture's been removed, scuffs on walls - it's just day to day living for most people - and as much a pain to sort out as scribbles or other 'basic damage' caused by kids.

  • If I saw as much as a crumbling cap of birdshit on the gatepost, no way would I even enter the house!:rotfl:

Seriously though, its important to like the area first - then the house. If the house is not to your liking you can always change it - more than you can the area. I reckon I could always 'see past' issues to do with what the children have done

I think it's worse that they've decorated one of the bedrooms in Barbie pink .... that way it's the whole room, probably 3 coats, to get rid of the muck.... at least with scribbles you might be able to get away with painting just a bit.

When we moved into our house, our front room was poo brown at the top and forest green at the bottom!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Or fun of any kind!
  • Its all frustration and part of learning to buy a house I would guess. Some things come with experience ;)
  • A few years back we bought a house that had been divided into four flats many years previously. These had been rented out to an assortment of tenants, some DSS others not. In the ground floor flat there was a delightful yellow bathroom suite that was so encrusted with filth it was now a brown/yellow combo :p The door adjacent to the oven in the same flat was liberally coated with noodles!

Come moving day the bath was still as brown as ever and the noodles (amongst other things) were still in evidence. Despite the squalor that was clearly apparent when we viewed, I am so glad we had the vision to see past this and were not dissuaded from purchasing as it turned out to be the best purchase we ever made.

Unfortunately some people just don't have that vision or have been conditioned into expecting all houses to be presented as new ;)

That said, I'm not a fan of people that let their kids scribble on walls/generally trash the place and equally could never understand the idea of putting your *valuables* out of reach of your kids whilst they're small and in the *into everything* phase - we just taught ours to respect our stuff and I can honestly say nothing came to any harm......
