  • Oh, tool late, racist card pulled.

Why why why, oh why, is it always the same old nonsense?

    Where?
Aren't we adults? Aren't we just gossipping? Wouldn't we be passing around the beer/ tea/ sheesha if we were together?

I have to say I don't think Graham is a racist susan. He does however have a big beef about affordable housing which - although it is unfair to speak for him - I think is at the root of a lot of his thinking.

Anyhow, welcome to the board. It's good to have some new blood around.

i don't think Graham is racist, i am sorry if you thought that i thought that Graham, it wasn't my intention, and when i said i wasn't offended and that the PC brigade were at fault for making everyone so worried about saying the wrong thing, this is what i meant!
  • and i still believe that immigrants are good for us :)
  • and now folk are scared to comment in case they say summert wrong and think that someone thinks they are racist.

I think i was encouraged by Hamish, and felt that I had to chip in. Forgive my terrible typing I have a cat trying to sit on my keyboard, he's ginger, there's nothing wrong with me :)

I think there are a lot of people here that have concerns about immigration susan. The problem is that anyone who is against unfettered immigration is automatically branded a racist, which I don't think helps the debate. Though nor do overt racists when they stick their nose in.

Fwiw I don't have any issue with immigrants, and having been one myself, the last thing that should happen is immigrants being vilified. However I'm also of the opinion that we have a jobs shortage at the moment, and therefore we should welcome immigrants in particular to skill shortage areas. We should not be encouraging people to move here if they have few skills to offer. My issue is with certain forms of immigration rather than immigrants themselves, if that makes sense.

I also think that the Romania/Bulgaria will not be as big as people make out. There's a lot of scaremongering going on there.

I'm very centrist politically and as a result people round here probably think I have splinters up my bum from the amount of fence sitting I do.

    Always a worrying sign. :)

But welcome to the board, we like having newcomers chip in, even if we can be an odd bunch sometimes. ;)

Crikey, something everyone who posts here should be able to agree with!

  • Thank you for your lovely welcomes, and sorry to just leap in as I did, I think when people are struggling with job hunting or price increases, they look for something or someone to blame, and it tends to be the immigrants that get the brunt of the blame.
As folk are getting older, we need younger willing workers to prop us up, our home grown enjoy our benefits system too much to be willing to do a hard job for minimum wage, or am I stereo typing and being racist?
From personal experience, I know of a few young white British men that won't work, my own brother says he won't get a job if he doesn't have to. (hangs my head in shame)

I think it's fine to have concerns about immigration.... the problem is most of the claims made to back those concerns turn out to be completely bogus.

And when someone is shown extensive evidence that immigration is a net positive, that immigrants don't take jobs from locals on aggregate, that immigrants have lower crime rates than natives, that immigrants increase pay outcomes for most native born, claim less in benefits, etc, but still choose not to believe the evidence as it's not "common sense", then chances are they have ulterior motives.
